The best food in CR is when you catch a fish (wahoo, dolphin, etc) and take it back to the Marriott and ask the chef to prepare it. They don't charge for the fish so you have to tip the chef. There is nothing better then fish cooked right out of the water except fo a great steak which you won't find in CR.

As Thirdworld correctly pointed out some of these girls are so unsophisticated that fancy restaurant with 5 star food and a mirador view of the valley is really a waste of time and money.

Exactomento!! I took a girl to La Piazzetta, she enjoyed it but do you think th BJ was any better later. Survey says.......eennnnnn!

Just give them any ole chiken and rice..........unless you have a very special one....then give them the VB treatment.....Camarones and Baileys....but still no CIEN!!

BTW, there are somewhat less expensive miradors that cater more to local clientele than to the tourist crowd, including the Donde Alcides, just a little ways beyond the popular Ram Luna. If they don't appreciate the romantic city lights, its not from any lack of sophistication as much as a lack of romance.

Mi amigo Prolijo...I've never heard of Donde Alcides. Do you have any more information about it? How far is it from Ram Luna? I've always loved Aserri. My first CR novia ('non-working' chica) lived in Aserri.
I love that common there, with the large gazebo. It almost looks like
a small town in the US. And what a view! I've never made it to the cross on the mountaintop though. My novia told me that a lot of suicides occur there. Anyway, I'd like to know more about Donde Alcides.

Took my Tica novia to several nice restaurants and she didn't seem to excited, several times she didn't even bother to order, said she wasn't hungry.
Well, on a recent trip the same thing happened and after dinner we walked around and found this little hole-in-wall soda and decided to stop in for a drink. After one beer my Tica said she was starving, i looked at her puzzled and asked her why she didn't order at the restaurant. she replied that she doesn't feel comfortable eating and hanging out at "those" places shes from a small town and likes eating at the little sodas instead." i don't get it, she gets all dressed up, looks freakin' incredible, but still doesn't care for my choice of restaurants. The funny thing is we sat at the soda for several hours and had a great time talking, eating, drinking and listening to the locals play guitar. I noticed a drastic change in my novia's personality as well. She was more talkative then usual and told me a lot of great stories about her childhood. I mentioned this to her and told her i was having a great time with her, in fact it seemed like this was the first time she was opening up with all those stories and she replied that she doesn't like the way i act at those other establishments, don't know what she means, but she also mentioned that she was having a great time as well.

What's up with these Ticas?

Hate to generalize as one size does not fit all.

Most of these girls are from humble backgrounds. Their parents (if daddy stuck around) are hard working people scratching out a meager existence.

She is not use to table cloth, flower vase on the table, fancy outfitted waiters bearing large menus in leather folders, type restaurants. She is both intimidated and nervous. She is fearful she is being judged, and found wanting, by both the service staff and other customers. She is unsophisticated and unsure of herself and her ability to act as she thinks she should in such a setting.

In the local soda she is at home in her element. She was raised in that environment and she relaxes and becomes herself. No one cares if she uses the wrong fork or orders the wrong thing. She is herself and that is why she seems so different to you. She is showing you the real her.

If you ever figure that one out, let us all know the answer. Don't even try to figure them out. Many men have tried, none successful. :?

Hell, I don't feel comfortable in a 5* restaurant, which is what a very nice restaurant feels like to some of these girls.

It ain't me and never will me.

I guess that's why I like Costa del Sol and Mariscar.

I agree with all of the last four posters. I think DD nailed the mystery of why chicas prefer simple sodas. Beyond that basic explanation for that one behavioral phenomenon, I agree with Mikey that there is far more that is unfathomable than there is that we can really understand. And I agree with Witling that even I feel more comfortable in a simple soda.

Its not that I don't know which fork to use or think anyone is judging me or whether I feel I need to try to impress the chicas with a fancy and expensive meal. Its that I can eat at a fancy restaurant anytime I want back home and I don't even do that much. When I come to CR I like to try to experience it as much like a local as I can - something I definitely can't do at home. If I were an expat living on a steady diet of gallo pinto and roasted chicken months on end I'd probably feel differently, but for a week-long vacation I can find all the variety I need or want eating mainly the standard local fare.

If any of the Colombianas want to take you to a restaurant, GO! I've eaten at some hole in the wall Colombian joints in San Jose and the food was always amazing. This one isn't a hole in the wall but there is a two story yellow house on Paseo Colon that has good Colombian food. The places may not be fancy but you can be pleasantly surprised sometimes when the girl chooses a place.

GT,
Donde Alcides is a good name because I'm not really sure WHERE it is. To be honest, I've never actually had the chance to eat there myself. I was really just recalling a post a post I had read by Don Giovanni from a couple of months ago. http://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=72581. Re-reading that post, I now realize that he said it was 5-6 kms past Ram Luna (not exactly "a little way") nor does it exactly have a view (the whole point of trekkingall the way up there). What its does have apparently are huge and delicious chuletas de puerco and dirt cheap. So it might still be worth checking out.

Donde Alcides is one of my VERY favorite places to eat. I have been there at least a dozen times , over the years, and the experience never changes. You get an enormous amount of food that is top quality for very little money.
The name of the place is relatively new. It was formerly known as "Centro Turistica de Tarbaca" and many gringos simply refer to it as "Porkchop Hill".
It is located in Tarbaca and is a few kilometers past Ram Luna on the same side of the street. There is a huge satellite dish just before you get there.
Many times, I have taken the Acosta bus which goes right past Donde Alcides. It is a new bus and the charge is 160 col. Not bad for a 17 k ride.

Thanks DG...although I've been to Aserri many times, I've never ventured past there into Tarbaca. I must put that on my 'places to go' list!
