XE.com http://www.xe.com/ucc/full.shtml is that rate, but I do not believe it....

I use the Interbank rate, which today is 499.02 http://finance.yahoo.com/currency

Today's Exchange
Rate: US$1/Colones:
Buy: ¢498.67
Sell: ¢500.46
Source: B.C.C.R.

That was Fridays official Banco Central Costa Rica rate.

What that means if you want to buy US $ each one will cost you 500.46 colones.

If you want to Sell US $ (read that as exchange which is what we do) they will give you 498.67 colones for each dollar.

Hotels, casinos, your bank at home (ATM withdrawals), merchants, etc will be less than the BCCR rate.

As a side note the Government announced yesterday that the devaluation of the colones will be less each day and they expect the end of year (2006) will be 530 to the US $.

Casinos often give the best rate so that you don't leave to exchange your money elsewhere (eg. Canadian Casinos give a better rate than the official exchange counters at the border).

ACTUALLY, THEY CAN BE BETTER THAN THE BANK: CASINO PARASISIO GAVE ME 5.15 THE OTHER DAY - THEY DO THAT IF YOU ARE A PLAYER AND THEY KNOW YOU ARE USING THE MONEY TO PLAY. THEY EVEN HAVE A SIGN AT THE CASHIER STATING THAT (NON PLAYERS GET 5.00)

If I read LVS's post correctly the difference is:

$100.00 @ 500 per dollar = 50,000

$100.00 @ 515 per dollar = 51,500

difference of 1500 colones = $3.00 not a great deal of money but an extra 3% isn't all that bad.

LV's post read 5.15 colons....maybe time for glasses

But you are right, it would have to be 515 colons not 5.15
