I understand lunch choices are everywhere in San Jose that is a given.

What intrigued me about your post was the claim that good food was available at half the price of the NY bar within 200 meters. That is why I asked for some names.

I am not familiar with the club 1930 but am very familiar with both Mariscar and Pollo Campesino. While both are basically chicken places with either some pizza or chinese thrown in neither is half the price of the NY bar or offer the variety.

Having been to all except club 1930 I think NY bar food choice and price is superior choice. YMMV

Excellent burgers....excellent soups

Speaking of soups and burgers, I think the secret ingredient to their burger is actually Lipton Onion Soup. In any case I agree that the burger is good although 1 out of 3 times it was a bit dry and overdone.

Del Rey's Del Mar burger is decent too (I credit VB w/ first pointing that out to me), and I agree that the News Cafe has a decent burger. Watch out for the burger at the Cafe Parisienne at the Hotel Gran Costa Rica at the Cultural Plaza. Very bad. It tastes grainy, salty, and meatless.

I love the atmosphere at the outside resturant in the Gran Hotel. Great place for a drink.

Years ago was my favorite breakfast place in San Jose. There was no News Café and rail so the best place to watch the chicas, as it was even busier with people walking bye than the rail is today, was the Gran Hotel Costa Rica café.

Unfortunately they have roped it off and put so many tall plants there you no longer can really people watch. Yes it keeps out the beggars and hustlers but now it to sterile to be much fun.

There’s a good little soda a couple of blocks from NYB. It’ on south side of Calle 3 one-half block west of Hotel Morazan---across the street from what used to be Tentaciones, later Casa Blanca. I don’t recall seeing a name posted over this little soda, but they have a long glass window where you can see the food and dining area. I stop by there a couple of times a week for lunch when I’m in town. The atmosphere is not much, so I usually order ‘para llevar’ and take it back to my hotel room.

My favorite is two grilled pork chops with onions, boiled potatoes and refried beans for 900 colons. It’s a very good lunch for a couple of bucks.

If I am thinking about the place you seem to be describing it is on Avenida 1 between Calle 7 y 5, That would place it in the Edifico Amalia almost across from Tentaciones/Casa Blanca now named Centerfolds.Just west of Faros now Dos Gringo's.

Food was OK very typical of the small sodas in the area. Is run by a lady in her 50's tall, thin grey hair.

You are right Ding Dong. It is on Avenida 1, just west of what used to be Faros. Thanks for the clarification.

I’ve tried at least a dozen sodas in SJ for lunch and that one is still my favorite. It’s cafeteria style, but they do a lot business so the food doesn’t sit there get dried out, and the portions are large. I think it's good deal for 2 dollars.

After having the burger at JR ribs I will not go to any other place for a burger while in SJ.

I ate a burger at the NY last week. To be quite honest, it wasn't very good. About the only good thing is that it was relatively cheap, but left a lot to be desired.

Have not had a hamburger there in quite sometime. Hope that your experience was not the norm as they have always put out a great burger in the past.

Did have corned beef and cabbage dinner there Friday and it was good.

Chilli is very tasty and the best part about it is that you can get it even when the kitchen is closed and the rest of the menu is not available.

Don't forget about the food at the Sportsman Lodge. I still remember the freshly made burrito and the tortia soup. I also like the nachos!!!
