Well it's that time of year again. :x

Imperial - 1100 colones
Water - 800 colones

That's all I drink at the BM so I'm sure all the other favorites on the menu have increased.

Since I 'm a cheap bastard this usually pisses me off, because the prices increase and the service gets worse. 3 barmaids and six guys at the bar, including me, and it takes me 20 minutes to get my beer as they just gossip, wash the dishes, and count the register money. :x

No comment from you rich bastards that like to spend money. :)

Since I am a poor pensionado living on a fixed income  I guess I am allowed to comment :D

That is something you get use to living here. Every time you restock some item from the grocery store you notice a few colones increase. Bars and restaurants tend to do it less frequently but more dramatically.

The devaluation of the colon was 8.4% in 2005 so it is not a price increase unless the raise was more than that percentage. Of course there is the inflation factor, about 14% last year, that has to taken into account by any business.

If you noticed when the colon was 400 to the $ the Tico Times charged 400 colones. When it hit 450 they raised their price to 500 colones and when it hits 550 they will raise the price to 600 colones. So you are either paying slightly less than a $, a $ or slightly more than a $. In the end it all balances out.

Hey guys, Inflation is all over the world. Get with it!

The DR/KL is unique to SJO and they know it. A monopoly

The last time I was there and approached a very good looking BM chica,
she wanted $ 250 for an hour.

There is just not enough competition there!

MONGERS, Go Elswhere !

Let me add my complaint too.
1100 Colones comes to $2.21 by my calculations. It includes the tip of 10 percent.

My local gin joint charges $3 a budweiser bottle plus tax plus tip.
So I guess it is not so bad after all. Besides I could not think of a better way to get eye candy while drinking a beer or water...
Sure beats the gringas I have to look at in the EEUU.

See you soon.

I pay $5 for domestic and $7 for imported, $2.21 is a bargain.

Freezing my A*S off here in the northeast and went out last night just to get the phuck out of the house. Local joint here close to manhattan my buddy had 2 beers I had two drinks total bill before tip was $37.50

I'll pay whatever the DR charges and smile all the way back to the northeast anytime... but due to the colone being weak the increase was inevitable.

True, but its more pronounced in Costa Rica. Inflation already affects the purchase price of our dollar, but in Costa Rica they have an additional controlled infation against our dollar.

However not all commodities in Costa Rica are really inflated.

If you've been paying for chica services in dollars you've been getting a bargain as time has gone on if you are paying the same amount in dollars or its equivalent in colones now as you did in the past (true whether you pay $50 or the dreaded Cien). Same for the Tico times, if you paid about $1 for it 5 years ago and are paying about $1 now you really haven't been affected by inflation.

This increase actually took place about 4-6 moths ago,but you weren't here to notice. The comments about the devaluation are correct.Actually the beers cost about the same given that and inflation. Besides, times are tough for dear, sweet John.He has to pay a lot more for gas on his boat,so the increase is NECESSARY.

Last August I was on a hunting trip in Mexico. A group of guys made a trip into the la zona roja to check out the working girls. The prices the girls asked were outrageous at best. I will not go into the gory details, but a very interesting point was made by an “old guy” that was with us.

He is a guy that has worked internationally for our company for many years. He told us; “These prices are absurd, everyone knows that to determine the price of a hooker in most countries, you take the cost of the local daily newspaper (not the Sunday addition) and multiply it times one hundred. He said that this is how you set the “base line” for the puta standard.

When I read Ding Dongs post that the cost of the Tico Times was 500 colones, I almost fell out of my chair. I believe that we should focus our attention to the price for the Tico Times and fight this obvious price gouging by the local newspaper. Just my 2 cents

For you history buffs, this will put things in perspective:

Germany 20's: after WWI, prices increased daily.
Peru, Argentina (late 80's): ~7500% inflation rates
Yugoslavia (93): inflation was 50,000%, and this coupled with a new currency threw the whole pricing structure out of whack

Kind of makes that 100 colones increase seem rather insignificant.

Heaven forbid that the visitors with the dollars benefit from someone eles's shitty economy. :x I wonder if the prices are increasing in the Tico joints. I bet I can walk 3 blocks to a Tico bar and buy a beer at the same price I bought it for 2 years ago (around 500 or 600 colones). I know, why squabble over 100 colones, when it cost $4.50 in the States for a Bud. If I recall correctly many people travel to CR because it is a bargain. I'm feeling it very difficult to shed a tear for the BM's loss of revenue for the decreasing colone, anyone check out the Del Mar food prices recently? Poor baby's.

If we are going to use that standard then the base price is 20000 colones as the local daily paper is not the Tico Times, an English language weekly, but rather La Nacion a Spanish language daily. The daily edition is 200 colones X 100 = 20000 colones.

I think that this most likely the base rate that most Ticos pay (or less). The only ones who have to negotiate down cien are the gringos who go to the strip clubs and BM.

I wish you guys would have a little more simpathy for us cheap guys. The increase on Bavaria Light is 200c to 1250c. At 7 per day, times 35 days, that is an increase of 43,000c for me. About $85. Just this one trip!
Let's get real here. This is serious money. Including drinks for chicas, this increase could cost me $1000 over the next year. I think I will take a lesson from Circus.
