i have read about the specs of changing dollars ie unmarked the date of note etc just wondering aout changing pound sterling will it be a problem?

You should not have a problem changing a few quid, the design is much harder to duplicate than the dollar. You won't get the best exchange rate at the airport but the upstairs bank may be the best place to change your money. The banks downtown may not be as willing to change sterling as they would dollars.

I have no direct knowledge of changing Pounds to Colones,
but I would suspect you will have a lot less problem if you
change Pounds to Dollars, prior to arriving in Costa Rica.
I say this only as an observation, since the exchange rate
at all of the hotels I have seen shows Dollars to Colones.
Here is a breakdown of the various exchange rates as
of 11:00 EST today:

Pound to EURO = 1.48456
Pound to Dollar = 1.75520 (boy that sucks for a Yank going to London)
Pound to Colone = 865.955

EURO to Colone = 583.308

Dollar to Colone = 493.365

The problem with that is that you lose money when changing pounds to dollars and then again when changing dollars to colones, better to exchange the pounds directly to colones at a bank.

Am not familiar with the ease or difficulty of exchanging pounds for dollars in Costa Rica.

I know the major banks exchange Euros for Colones so perhaps you might want to travel with Euros or see if there is a Costa Rican Embassy or Consulate in your area and check with them.

Re ATM cards. Any card should work OK as long as the issuing bank is part of the network. eg Cirrus. The machine dispenses colonnes and the issuing bank does the conversions and charges cardholders account accordingly.

At least that is how it works for Canadian ATM Cards.

My ATM card worked fine at a machine in a bank about three blocks from the Prez,( heading towards the museum and then left half a block)


I did tell my bank I was going to be in Costa Rica the week before I left so they would not be alarmed when withdrawals from San Jose started showing up

Anyway, I did remember the Newbie tip to never carry large amounts of cash...usually limited myself to carrying about $100 in colones/dollars max with the rest locked up at the hotel
