Hey Prolijo,Doubt the young backpackers would care what we do.I expect they are a fairly liberal crowd.Decor of the place reminded me of a 60"s hippy place.Clerk spoke English and was freindly. It is on Ave 7 between Calle 3 and 5 North side.Real close to Muses.Sign in front butnot obvious.rbc100

Pro...I looked on my tourist map of Downtown San Jose and it looks like the hostel Pangea is in the east/seedier side of Barrio Armon off of Avenida 7 and between Calles 3 and 5...maybe about 5 blocks east of Zona Blue....?

There is always the Bella Vista on Avenida Central near Calle 21(?). It was 20+ cash per night if you paid ahead with a decent breakfast. Barrio California is better than some of the neighborhoods mentioned in this thread, though not by much, and I can't imagine they'd care who you bring home. The last time I stayed there it sounded like a cross between a TB ward and an MP, so if noise polution bothers you, don't go. Be careful outside, particularly on Sunday, but there are worse places in town. It is an interesting neighborhood during the week with many sodas, bars and businesses, and is only a few blocks from the gulch.

Seems to me the only way to have any privacy at Tangea is to rent a double for yourself otherwise you would have someone in the room with you. This would also help avoid any chica fees. Seems like a double would be about $28 which isn't bad. I like that neighborhood during the day- plenty of restaurants. I might try it once in January. I would like to have a pool, some atmosphere, and a bunch of partying girls.

Hey all Just trying to keep this thread alive. Does anybody have a more recent report on the Hostels in particular Neuvo Johnson and Pangea. From what I see from the websites, Pangea seems to be the place I rather be at. Pangea has a bar and a pool (clean hopefully). I mean not many places in SJO has a pool. The only problem I see with Pangea is that it doesn't look like its in the good part of town. I'm looking on staying at one of these hostel for a couple of nights. Any reports would be great. If not i'll probably stay at the Presidente, does the master suite have 2 brs? Sorry for the zillion questions. thanks

Les, Pangea is not really in a bad part of town. It's across the street from Saint Thomas hotel just off the park.. It's close to the Holiday Inn. From ZB, you go up the hill and take a right at the corner. I believe that's 7th. I imagine that street looks like a hell hole at night and I wouldn't walk of course. But it's still the gulch area. They told me they will not allow me to bring chicas back though.

Actually the Hostels is the cheapest. So has anyone actually stayed in the Pangea recently. I don't mind it not being chica friendly since, i'm more of a MP dude. Maybe i'm just stuck on the fact of a pool and chicks by the pool (as pics shows LOL). I just don't want it to be in a dicey neighborhood. Meaning when I do return back to the room rather late often and I don't want to be hassled when i'm drunk and in front of the hostel. I never really walk around at night, so cabs are used regardless. Even when I was at the Presidente I took a cab from DR to Pres because, I was tipsy and don't want to be bothered by touts.

Their prices have doubled since this thread was started.BUT: rooftop bar AND mere steps away from Harry's Bar Poas (a proud CRT sponsor) with good filling food and a pleasant ambiance.

not a recommendation--just info
