I am new to the board (today) but not new to Costa Rica. I have heard that sometime in December they have the Festival of Lights.

When is it?

Is it a good time to go?

Is anyone going?

Please don't jump down the newbies back if this is posted else where.....Thanks

Festival of the lights will be held on Saturday December 11. I think it something you should see if you are going to be in San Jose.

It is in mid December but I don't know the exact date. It is fun to watch but it is really just a parade. I think I had more fun watching the massive amounts of people watching it. To them it seemed bigger than just a parade.

The time of year is good. The rain has mostly subsided by then. There are a lot of people out and about Christmas shopping during the days.

Hatrick;
Don't you read what the other guys post? Ding Dong clearly stated that its Saturday, Dec. 11!
It goes along Ave. Segunda just after dark and a good place for viewing is in front of the Gran Hotel Costa Rica.

Here is another thread about viewing locations and my warnings about the confetti. http://www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=50844. The place I watched it last year was in front of the Gran Hotel. You have to get there early to get a good spot or be prepared to worm your way through the crowds and even then you probably won't be able to see much over the heads of other people. Having some sort of chair or footstool to stand on might be helpful. Be sure to leave any watches or wallets at home as this will be a pickpockets paradise. Hold on very tight to your camera if you decide to bring one. Personally, not being a crowd person and having seen it before I will NEVER bother to watch it from the street again.

You see people on the upper floors of the various banks on Ave. 2 looking down on the parade and that is definitely the way to do it if you can get an invite. I had suggested getting a hotel room with a view and throwing a Fiesta de Luz party, However I am not sure of the entire parade route. Where does it start? I know it goes by the Royal Dutch but that hotel is not chica-friendly. I think it starts on Paseo Colon but I'm not sure where. I had suggested the Ambassador Hotel as a possible party location. Can anyone confirm whether the parade goes by there? If so is it too late to reserve a room with a street view for that night? Perhaps a group of CRT'ers migh be interested in splitting the cost and throwing a party for a few guys and their chicas. I think that could be a really great idea if it is workable.

The parade starts at the east end of Sabana Park. The Hotel Ambassador is a prime location to view the parade if you can get a room with a balcony on Paseo Colon side.

The Royal Dutch is also a prime viewing location but not sure how many rooms face Avenida Segundo. I have never known the Royal Dutch to be chica unfriendly. Is this something new?
