Guaro, whew what is it? Well a member on a Dominican Republic Board replied to this question with the following:

Just in case you don't know what guaro is.

http://www.cr.cx/guaro-drinking-songs.html

"Guaro, a Moonshine Rum concoction (distilled sugarcane mostly, but containing other unknown additives, in the author's opinion), is one of the traditional alcoholic beverages found in Costa Rica.

It's popularity is a result of it's low price.

It comes in a few different flavors and blends, with basically the same aftereffects (you usually wake up on the floor in a pool of vomit and the following 12 hours are the worst hell you've ever been in).

Some of the locals insist guaro was invented by the Guaro Indians, and more information about those critters is available from here.

Many people drink it every day.

Perhaps that's why Costa Rica is famous for it's rocket scientists (0), world famous artists (0), writers (0), thinkers (0), etc.

Many tourists find it a crude spirit, but some return to the states raving about it.

Recently, it has been imported into California and Florida, and has somewhat of a following among the soon-to-be-retarded.

Guaro based mixed drinks usually consist of a shot or two of Guaro added to a glass of Sprite, Fresca or some fruit flavor, and plenty of ice.

That’s how most Costa Ricans prefer it.

The local brand is called Cacique, which means 'Indian Chief'.

There are both red label (for the local imbibers) and black label (exported to the foreign devils).

Clear guaro is the most popular, however there are other flavors (colors actually) that are mainly a mixture of the clear plus some burned cork from cheap imported Chilean wine bottles found in the municipal garbage dump.

A lot of people have tried it once. I count myself among them. :D

Geez...I brought a bunch of Guaro home to hand out as Christmas presents! I hope I have a few friends left by New Year's Day.

You guys may have noticed the big Cacique tanks on the right hand side of the Pan-Am Hwy just past the airport as you head down to Jaco. If you want to try Guaro I suggest you stick with the Cacique brand. A lot of the stuff the Ticos drink is real moonshine and that stuff will sometimes make you go blind.

If you are looking for something to phuck you up, I guarantee a drink called "cherite" (sp?)will help you accomplish your goal. The only place that I had it was at Zarpe's behind the bar, before it closed. As it was explained to me, it is some kind of distilled guaro. Similar to rocket fuel

I think "guaro" is a local short version of the name "aguardiente", which is the name for a similar beverage in some other countries in the area. I usually describe it as rum that has been aged since Tuesday.

Veelee...I think you may be right. Don't the Ticas/locals pronounce it 'guado'? I had a Tica favorita who always ordered 'Guado sours'. I didn't know what the hell she was drinking until I saw the Cacique bottle.
