Has anyone read the book "In Search of Captain Zero" or know anything about him?

Last year, there was this 60-something year old Gringo that my brother and his best friend met at the bus station in Puerto Viejo. He convinced them to rent a room from him for a few nights. Apparently, the Gringo was making a commission off of providing business for this black man, who owned a house with rooms for rent.

The man told my brother and his friend that his name was Captain Zero, which at the time, they didn't know what that meant. Now, there is a book about Captain Zero. Parts of the book said that Captain Zero was a surfer and left the U.S. to venture off into Mexico and Central America. Now his best friend is driving south in his pickup searching for him.

I VAGUELY remember this character called "Captain Zero." Wasn't he one of the main "interviewees" for some research paper about prostitution in CR? Originally from Michigan (I think). I could be totally out in left field on this one but, I seem to remember it this way.

Sounds like a lot of trouble when he could just email him.

Funny you should bring it up as I have it right here with me. The name of the book is In Search of Captain Zero. i think I either bought it at the airport in the C.R. or on the way down. It was written by Allan C. Weisbecker and it is a good read. The guy surfs his way down through Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua and ends up in Costa Rica where he hooks up with an old friend who is tied up doing coke and crack. It is a good read.

yeah, Allen lived down in Pavones for a while, bought some land and built a house. His new book "Can't you get along with anybody" documents his departure from the area. Haven't read it yet myself but look forward to it.
The guy he went looking for and found was named Christopher he was over on the caribbean side.

A friend of my brother's said that Sean Penn was going to do a movie about the book about two years ago. I don't guess it ever got the approval to start filming.

Its a good read. It talks about surfing throughout CA, but ends in PV. The guys gets depressed about his friend's drug use. The guy came home, so this other guy trying to sell you sounds like he is FOS.

I am in the process of reading his latest book," Can't You Get Along With Anyone" at this time. He also has written "In Search of Captain Zero" and "Cosmic Banditos"

As mentioned his websites are:

www.banditobooks.com
www.cygawa.com

He was writing an article for Mens Journal about the death of Max Dalton in Pavones. Max Dalton was the gentleman who was shot along with a squater in the land disputes in the southern zone of Costa Rica. His latest book goes in depth into the situation revolving around this incident.

The book also explains the movie deals. Sean Penn is not his favorite, very interesting situation. Also one with John Cusak he has written about boths of these in CYGAWA.

The other two books are completely different from his latest book.
