Out of the dozen or so gas stations that I pass on my
way to work, the average price this morning was $3.06
for Regular Unleaded Self Service. I paid $2.67 this past monday
here in South Central Maryland.

From Woodland Hills, California--I just gased up about an hour ago. The lowest grade (I guess that's regular) was $3.00 while the middle gas was $3.07. Don't know about the supreme. That was at a Shell station by the way.

NY... wed morning filled up before work, regular @ $2.79.

Driving home from work wed night same station regular @ $3.01.

UPDATE: thursday night regular @ $3.15.......13% increase in less than 36 hours

Somebody put up a website that lists the lowest and highest prices in the area. http://www.newyorkgasprices.com/

There are places on Long Island where premium is around $4.00.

Thank God my SUV lease is up in 11 months and 2 days. I'm getting a 3 cylinder 1992 Yugo, if I can find one. That sucka gets like 60 miles to a gallon.

Lo Siento Amigos,

I fear that $5-6/gal is ahead.

I am fortunate in my area --- price for regular at some stations still $1.99 :D A couple of years ago it was $0.89/gal

But we do get a lot of our crude from Venezuela, Chavez notwithstanding.

Best advice -- stay home with your honey, do not chase around all over your area for bad gringa pfussy and burn up all those gallons of gas :P

Cygnus

Okay, I haven't yet been to CR, but I know a little about this topic.

There is not, repeat NOT a gasoline shortage. A number of refineries in the storm-affected area were shut down for safety reasons when the storm approached, but refineries are pretty hardy enterprises, and they will not remain idle one moment longer than necessary. They are starting up even now, and will begin shipping products as soon as they can. The folks that run these enterprises are accustomed to dealing with all sorts of problems and are amazingly resourceful. If they can't send gasoline out in trucks, it'll go out in barges. If pipelines are idled for lack of electricity, auxiliary generation equipment is already on the way. Refiners will not allow a plant to sit idle - especially when there's money to be made. The increases in the wholesale price of gasoline will assure increases in supply.

You will see some short-term price gouging at local gasoline stations. This is because the gasoline that was sold two days ago for $2.25 will have to be replaced tomorrow with gasoline that may cost $3.25. Each gallon already sold represents a $1.00/gallon loss. Since the station operators have to pay cash for their product when it is delivered, and each trailer holds about 7000 gallons, the owner risks not having the cash to pay for the next load of fuel. As long as the price is increasing, the station owner is going to try to minimize that risk by increasing prices as fast as the market will bear. You can’t really blame them. The idiots that see this happening and rush to top off their tanks so they can save a little money are creating gas lines and helping increase demand (thus helping support the ridiculous prices).

The oil rigs in the gulf are undamaged for the most part – the few with problems have received a lot of attention, but the majority of them are okay – they’re designed to weather storms.

Let’s look at the fundamentals. We have had no net loss in refining capacity - the refineries are ramping up as fast as they can. Most of the crude oil that flowed from the gulf a week ago is ready to start back up. Thanks to a waiver to EPA regulations granted by the president, the refineries in the rest of the country will begin producing 6-7% more gasoline from the same crude input. We have no problem on the supply side.

As for the demand side, high prices WILL cause a net drop in demand – it happens every time. Teenage K*ds may start taking the bus to high school instead of driving the family’s extra car (they will in MY household, anyway). Of course, the fools that rush to get the last quarter of their tanks topped off with today’s “cheap” gasoline will support the higher price for a while, but our gas tanks are only so big, and that effect on prices will peter out at some point. Oh, we shouldn’t ignore the sudden drop in gasoline demand from the New Orleans area for the next few months.

Many oil refineries schedule maintenance in the fall when gasoline demand slacks off – I know of at least one refinery that is making plans to postpone that activity for a few weeks (recognizing that the price spike will be short-lived). That delay combined with similar activities happening at other refineries, will continue to pump gasoline into the market that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.

You will see a lot in the news about gas shortages in Atlanta in the next couple of days. This is because their local government foolishly insists that the Atlanta gasolines meet specifications required nowhere else in the country. Only a few refiners make gasoline to this specification, and I think most of them shut down for the storm. Serves ‘em right.

Both demand and supply activities support the moderation of today’s gasoline prices. All we have to do is wait. The worst thing we can do is have the government meddle in this. Supply and demand laws are inviolable, and monkeying around with them will only screw things up.
