Are you suggesting a certain wise-guy wannabe whose handle has been banned from this and other websites might qualify as a legend?! Fuggedaboutit!

We all have our own ideas on this subject so I thought I'd go "look it up" so to speak. A legend is defined as "an unverified story handed down from earlier times, especially one popularly believed to be historical, a romanticized or popularized myth of modern times or one that inspires legends or achieves legendary fame." "A legend can also be a person or achievement worthy of inspiring such a story - anyone or anything whose fame promises to be enduring."

Going by this one type of legend could be someone who is no longer with us but whose acheivements or exploits are of such fame that they have been passed down to this day. In the early days before the wide disemination of monger knowledge via internet discussion forums, those who participated in this hobby were true pioneers. To the extent their exploits are known today some of them would certainly qualify as legends. Others are remembered solely by the other pioneers that came up with them. DD's mentor was certainly a legend to DD, but not to the rest of us.

However, there are several others who for a variety of reasons are no longer with us and yet whose names still are often repeated by those still active today. Tampa Gringo is certainly one such person. Other possible candidates that might fall into that category include Lump (for his pioneering monger map), Flander (so well beloved that he was eulogized on this board), Mexpat (for his guide to living and eventually leaving the dream) and, as much as I hate to say it due to our differing philosophies, Astroglide (for his GFE (sic) Guide and the "Crystal, braces and subsequent Assault" soap opera that kept all of us so fascinated for so long).

Then there are others who, IMHO, definitely qualify as living legends (ie their fame promises to be enduring). Guys like Don Gordo and Circus are living proof you don't have to die or disappear into the woodwork to become eligible for the future hall of fame. Both were among the original pioneers. Both went on to be active posters on this and other boards passing on the knowledge that they had gained to future generations. Don Gordo is the only guy I know whose birthday is celebrated as an annual monger holiday in CR. And tales of Circus, his jangling fanny pack, his warped sense of humor and, of course, the famous Huggy are all definitely the stuff of legends (we love ya man).

There are a few others that are still highly active and if they don't quite qualify as living legends are well on their way to becoming ones. My hat has to go off first to Gamlingman and Tman for starting this board. I suppose by the same token Rico should be included in this group for his pioneer work with CRS, but his ultimate fuck-up with that board may have made him the Pete Rose of CR Mongering, banned for life from the Hall of Fame. Another nominee would have to be RBC100 for his down and dirty tico Bar and MP List. He is a contemporary pioneer exploring and discoverying off-the-beaten track places for all of us to enjoy. He's also a personal favorite as a nominee since he exemplifies to me the true whorticulturist, savoring the country as much as the women. One more nomination for the future hall of fame, a personal favorite of mine since I consider him a true friend is VegasBob who is always there holding court at the BM guiding newbies and vets alike with his on-the-spot intel.

There are many others who are legends to the larger monger community if not so much exclusively to CR. That category might include some who have appeared here such as KosherKowboy (for his unique style), JimmyDR (for his DR expertise) and NibuRaphael (for his travels to every little backwater in all of Latin America). These guys maybe legendary but they're not particularly legendary as CR Mongers.

I'd also nominate myself if I weren't so modest. I'd like to think my map will have as much lasting impact as Lumps did before it, but that determination is not really for me to say. Besides its going to be hard to acheive the status of legend if my name doesn't even appear on it. Maybe I oughta fix that. Oh well, I guess I'm only a legend in my own mind. :(

Seriously though, I think we really should have an annual poll on this topic. Just as we had the Tica of the Year (TOY) selected by all the members of the board, we should select a monger or mongers to be added to the the Hall of Fame each year. The results could be announce as part of the annual CR anniversary celebrations. So far I count 12 nominations for the CR Monger Hall of Fame that I've made above. Does anyone want to second the nominations and start a poll?

And then there are those that post A LOT but who lay so low that no one has ever actually seen them. Such unverified exploits indisputably fit the definition of legend or myth better than anything else. Whether they're also fact is all that remains open to debate.

Prolijo, I do consider you a legend. I have learned a lot from your elaborate posts since the days of "The Real Man".

Nominate Prolijo?!?!? You've got to be kidding. As long as you're going to be nominating blowhards, why don't you nominate The Real Man while you're at it. Those "two" guys are complete jerks. If you want to have some really worthy candidates then I would like to nominate my "various friends" - Yucatan, Travis Bickle, Vanstretch and most of all that heroic monger whose name can no longer be mentioned (that starts with "B" and rhymes with sing). BTW, my friend's discount is still in effect at the Morazon, just be sure to mention his name when you make a reservation so he can get his kickback.

As for the rest of you. You're all DISMISSED

Side note: for all of you who came in late, this post is an inside joke. So don't start sputtering, defending or flaming. Hopefully, we're really above that here and besides it isn't even necessary.

On a more serious note: My "friend" Prolijo regretfully omitted the 3rd leg of the triumvirate that established this board, namely Dallasman. He was also the compiler of the original "Magic CD", which has helped set the mood and is still probably used by many mongers to this day.

Boy, this list of would-be hall of famers is starting to get really long.

I started this thread, based on someone who you have already identified....So you are highly perceptive, as always, but you nailed him as one of the two "living legends", and in my earlier post, I stated who it was not.....perceptive, perceptive, perceptive....Long live you, Prolijo, you are the man, Hope to meet you sometime, you legend in waiting!

Legends? Ah Bull Shit! I've met a few mongers who earned my respect, a few who I've lived vicariously thru their escapades and a few who, well I'd rather forget. Zig, I think your remenicing about the "old days" of hanging at the rail, Tin Jo, Idem ect. that bring back fond memories of past experiences and friendships.

As for Rick, he is a friend who offered sound advice, unconditional friendship and a fun guy to be around. He has never disparaged anyone on this or any other board. Slaming him publicly was unfair and disturbing. What posessed you to do that?

My absence from this board is mainly because of it's success. Found it tedious at best and anoying at worst putting up with "one visit" experts who know it all and offer bad, unsolicited advice. They don't know when to shut up. Why is it the same topics get rehashed ad nausium when a little research will reveal a wealth of information on any topic you can think of?

Friendships formed here and information learned from quality guys like Rick, Randy, LVSteve, Drillem, and others who took the time to learn the language and culture and unselfishly shared their experiences has given me the confidence to venture to other destinations further south that have not been spoiled by "ugly americans" who seem to have invaded the paradise formerly known as Costa Rica.

Observing over the last few visits to SJO, the realization hit that the purity and sweetness of the chicas has morphed into a hard jaded edge that matches the stupidy displayed by the many loud mouthed morons who come here to only take from this wonderful culture while giving nothing of substance in return.

Enjoy it while it lasts boys, becasue the fat lady is ready to grab the microphone.

Papa Nut

Zig,
I appreciate your nomination and kind words, but I'm going to have to decline. I've listed at least a dozen guys who deserve their place in the hall of fame before me and there are undoubtedly many more. All that makes me unique is the enjoyment I get in repeating what I've learned from my few trips and the many guys who went before me (and perhaps my unique style for doing so). Don't confuse the true legend with just the old story teller.

Actually, I tend to agree somewhat with Papanut and Psychman. There are many here that to varying degrees could qualify as legends depending on your definition of that term. It can be somewhat entertaining to speculate or debate who those guys might be. But before we go and venerate those individuals too much, we should still put things in perspective. The difference between a greenhorn and a vet is really just a matter of a few trips. Some pick it up quickly others never seem to get it. Either way, none of us really give those others much thought once we've hooked up with our own novia's of the moment. In that regard, we are all just equals. If there is one thing that really is in danger of becoming a legend rather than a reality, it would be CR itself. Things are definitely changing, though hopefully it is not as dire as Papanut describes it. I suspect years from now when not even Vitamin V or the miracle drug of that era can get us up, we will be thinking back fondly more of the "Legend of CR" and the chicas we once knew and loved, or perhaps the guys we've shared drinks and good times with as we will some guy we read about on a discussion board.
