A friend of mine was in SJ last week and said the Don Carlos bar opened on Sept. 12 and that they were going to allow working chicas in the bar and hotel.
Also supposedly long term plans are to open a casino in the DC as well.
He also said he had heard that the DC had 8 hotel rooms available.
It would be great if this happens and provides another option for us to enjoy.

Based on overview on the website, I don’t think will be for us. And when I check the rooms. The first five rooms list.Small Double Room, Large Double Room, Double Room, Superior Double Room, Standard Double Room, are the same size. WTF? No food or drinks per the website

But each room comes with Fan, Mosquito net, Dustbin, Toilet AND Toilet paper.

Obviously, the web site is out of date, but if you look through pictures you will see an older basic hotel. It makes me think of how the SL properties may have looked BEFORE they became the SL. Lots of common area, lots of stairs, even a fountain. If you look at the last few pictures (43 - 47) you will see a Whiskey Barrel Bar.

New name for the Don Carlos, and so far just some of the rooms being rented out... but nothing else is in operation...restaurant or bar, etc. As far as I can tell.

I haven't stayed there since it was the Don Carlos and there was no AC then, but none was needed. Back then the natural airflow along with fans was all that was needed. This is true of a lot of old buildings until they are "modernized" by closing off open air spaces with plexiglas roofs, blocking breezeways, etc. Hotels do this to reduce noise impact on neighboring properties. (from loud music until midnight and then clicking heels on tile floor after  ) Before it was the Don Carlos, the property was a large private residence and home to two presidential families.

There is a lot of specious history in Costa Rica. Like the time I was told some building was made from melting down the cannons from the French Revolution. First, the cannons were more valuable as CANNONS than as building materials and why were the French sending the cannons to Costa Rica? And to be used as building materials?

Looks like it has potential to be something decent. Back before someone had the brilliant idea to turn the entire SL into a bar it had some personality too. I'd much rather relax around a small table instead of having zero options but to waste on a barstool. Nice property but seems maybe a dubious location? Will be interesting to have options to the same old thing.

We do need more options, HDR closed, La Amistad up for sale, Hotel Little Havana closed for reservations, I have hope for the mongering scene in the gulch.

CR is constantly changing and they migrate to different locations. Ask the girls, they will tell you. Beetle bar closed in Jaco, HDR closed in San Jose, but the girls migrated to a different location.

And that’s not an exhaustive list of closures either. I could go on and on.
