Actually, I like Oscar. I met him about 3 years ago, and enjoyed talking to him. Yeah, he always asks for money, but he's honest about it. He knows he drinks too much, and ought to get a job.
But he's never tried scamming me, like that obnoxious little guy who wants food . . . "I'm from California and I got robbed. If you give me money for food, I'll eat it in front of you..."
Oscar's history is interesting. He may be exagerating a little at times, but there is a lot of detail and consistency over the years.
One parent is Nica, one Tico. He grew up in North Hollywood. 10 or 15 years ago, he was driving drunk, crossed over the centerline, and crashed into a car. 2 people were killed. He pled guilty, did time (something like 3-5 years, I don't remember). When he got out, he was deported.
He told me his age and that he went to North Hollywood High and played footblall. I used to listen to the radio show "Loveline" which is hosted by Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla. Adam is one of the funniest guys around. He was also on "The Man Show". On the radio, Adam often told stories of playing football for North Hollywood High, drinking before the games, and mentioned some of his buddies by name. (Not Oscar).
As Oscar was telling me about N. Hollywood High, I asked him if he played with a guy named Adam Carolla. He said he did, and then started telling me stories about drinking before games, etc. He mentioned his buddy The Weez, who Adam has also mentioned. He says he had no idea Adam was popular in the US.
Note, he wasn't just answering my questions. He was telling stories. I'm the one that guessed they may have been the same age and played together. Only by listening to Loveline over a long period of time, would anyone be able to know all those facts. So, one minor claim to fame, he hung around with Adam.
Anyway, Oscar has given me some good information and interesting conversation. I usually give him a few coins, which I know will go toward beer and probably drugs. It's too bad that he doesn't get a job. He's totally bilingual, US educated, friendly and street smart.
Maybe others have had negative experiences with Oscar, but I don't find him obnoxious.
