I would be curious to hear if anybody has a personal experience of “just walking away” after they damaged a rental car. It would be ohhhh so easy to make the tourists’ life complicated by saying they cannot leave the country unless they “work this out.” They will say whatever you did was the one exception to the insurance policy. I am not saying don’t buy the insurance, I am saying don’t let that insurance policy give you a false sense of security.
Here's my personal experience.... about 2007-2008, I rented a Hyundai Tuscan (small SUV) from Enterprise Rent a car at the airport. For some reason, I took the full insurance (100% coverage, versus the basic 80% mandatory) that time. I always used to take the minimum liability of 80% because I didn't want to pay for full. And I always use my credit card for the free CDW (collision damage waiver) coverage.
I was driving on a two-way street (one lane each way) and a pickup coming in the other direction lost control, swerved to the right, hit the curb, then swerved in the other direction over the double yellow into oncoming traffic (me). He smashed into my rear left door so hard that my car spun about 180* and backed into a rain gutter ditch.
Cops came an did a report. I called the rent-a-car agency, and they brought a replacement car (same model) for me on a flatbed and took the totaled car away in about 2 hours. And I never heard any more about it after that day. Like he said, no worries with full coverage. Had I only had the mandatory 80% coverage, I would be liable for 20% of the damage to the other guy's car who hit me.
It's my only accident in about 15 rentals. I like the freedom. i drive to the suburbs daily when I'm there, so it makes sense. Parking in SJ is a bitch though. It's expensive and sometimes no spaces near by.
