I get these yellow foam earplugs from work and they are a Godsend, always use those before I go to bed (if I'm alone) and get a great nights sleep. Someone else posted the latins seem to have greater patience for noise, whether it's barking dogs or horns it isn't going to change so get ya some plugs, man!

the most irritating thing in costa rica, by far, is the obligatory gringo idiot that speaks "dude" spanish

(dude spanish = speaking with an annoying Pauly Shore accent and adding an "o" to the end of english words to make it sound spanish: as in "yo quiero change-o esto dinero . . . yo voy-o have-o mooch-o funn-o....)

makes me cringe

There's a pic of gut-bucket guy in the gallery somewhere, he's a celebrity in the gulch but not as popular as the old Tuba player...

BEWARE OF THIS GUY.........In the two weeks that I have been in San Jose, this character has approached me at least three times. He is a 50ish man, nicely dressed, about 5' 8", thinning, graying hair. He seems to be posing as some sort of real estate agent for CR real estate. He carries around an armful of CR real estate brochures. His method of operation is to approach you on the street and ask you if you are interested in any CR real estate. If you tell him you have no interest in any CR real estate, he then pulls a handful of business cards from a massage parlor or strip club [I don't know which one, as I threw it away] from his pocket and insists that you take one. He then insists that you give him some money. If you refuse to give him money, he becomes quite belligerent and will pursue you up the street. This same scenario happened to me today, and he actually threatened me with physical violence to the point that it was drawing the attention of by-standers. He pulled something from his pocket, however I did not stay close enough to him to tell what it was. I quickly walked away from him and told him I was going to report him to the next police officer I saw. I will try my best to avoid this character in the future, and suggest we all do the same.

ADMINISTRATION 1........you may want to post my last post under the security and scams section. Please feel free to do so, if you deem it appropriate.

God I felt like beating the hell out of this idiot. I guess this could go under loud mouth gringos who are an expert on everything.

Zebra,
You want to narrow the area where you encountered this guy (at least three times) down to something more than just "San Jose"?

Witling,

You may see him anywhere in the gulch area. Yesterday he was on Central Avenida near the News Cafe. He speaks good English, and at first seems quite normal, however his demeanor can turn quickly if you refuse to give him money. He can get very aggressive.

In regard to my above post concerning the "real estate agent", after a long period of not seeing this guy, on the eve of my return to the United States, I ran into him again at the doorway to The New York Bar. I don't think he remembered me from our previous encounter [and I didn't remind him either]. He was as aggressive as ever, this time demanding I take one of his massage parlor cards and shouting at me from the time I approached the door until I took a seat at the bar.
