For all who stayed at the Castillo before the remodel, it's a very sad message to post that Maria the receptionist passed away on the 11th of January. What a great sweet woman. Funny how opposite she was from the girls working there when the old bar was open and those coming and going but she was so nice to everyone and non judgemental. Few women like her anymore anywhere especially in Costa Rica.

Seems the good go young, we will all live forever...

RIP, Maria. When I stayed in SJ, it was usually at Castillo. The only receptionists I knew were Martha and Patricia... I don't recall Maria.

Well, I first stayed there in 2003 and Maria was there from almost the beginning so I don't know how you could have not known her but thanks for your RIP.

I should have realized that guys who stayed at the old Castillo didn't use CRT then or now and most everyone here is the newer generation of clients. Not good or bad, just reality.

Others who get accolades here from the older days must not have been in that Castillo crowd. It was like a fraternity of characters...

Never the less, I am quite surprised that nobody here knew that lovely woman. Oh well, times and people change.

I am glad that I knew her when she worked there and also for a few years after. All that time as a friend.

Was she the tall slender gal who used to help Klaus a lot as he got older (and out less)?

Yes, that was Maria. Ironically she also took care of arrangements when he passed away.

I remember Maria. I think she was there until Castillo was closed, then didn't come back when it re-opened. She truly was a very nice lady, always ready to help with any questions I had. Hoosierdaddy, do you know the cause of death?

I knew, in the back of my mind, that the name Maria sounded very familiar. Indeed, I remember her now. I did not associate Maria with the reception desk, but rather with the Castillo bar... especially during the time that Tom ran it as the Gardens Bar. Actually, I got to know Maria very well when she worked for Tom. Yes, Maria was a wonderful lady. The last time I saw her was in 2013 when she filled at the front desk in for Patrizia. Rest in Peace, Maria... it was a pleasure to have known you.

Thanks for your nice comments fellas. You both are right and it's obvious you knew her. She was a great person and I'm so sad that she won't be there when I make it back to San José.

John, I was told that she didn't feel well and went to the hospital and passed away shortly after. That's all I know now.

Stay healthy...

The last time I saw Klaus, he was living in a small room in the Castillo, and had part of an arm amputated. Hazel had told me he had passed when she visited me.

Sad to hear about Maria. She was always great to chat with when I stayed at the old Castillo. That was always my hotel of choice. Some funny characters staying there. Klaus was an odd dude but nice. I remember the two old German Americans who stayed there too. I think one was named Otto? Fun times there. RIP Maria.
