Headed to SJ in September and its been soo long since I have been there, I will ask you guys, the experts.

I am looking for a place to go sit outside or open air, where you can watch the day go by.

Have drinks or coffee or just like I said, watch the day go by? I am not a tourist, so you won't find me at any museums, etc, but I can't be chica chasing and gambling all the time. So looking for a recommended spot!

One more ? since i have your attention. Staying at the Taormina. I am a swimming pool kind of guy, enjoy lounging in the pool and taking some sun. Any place I can go and use the pool? I have no issues paying a fee or buying from their venue.

Gracias hermanos. Pasa buena dia!

The athletic club at the Barcelo San Jose Palacio used to sell day passes for the use of the pool. I haven't been there for a couple of years, so check first. It is a really nice facility.

Stay at the BARCELO like I did and pay the $65 chica fee. The free breakfast buffet is outstanding and the view and atmosphere of the hotel is great

The Hotel Santo Tomas, just across the street from Bar Poas has a nice but very small pool and a decent gym that they used to let you get a day pass for. If I remember correctly it was less than $10 for the day. Every time I went (a couple of years ago), I was the only one there. I believe that most of the guests are Eco tourists and are out running around on day trips.

It is a short walk from the Taormina and after you are done at the pool you can get a late lunch at Soda Peru and a beer at Poas.

Does the pool get some afternoon sun?

There is a new office building being completed just north of the Taormina, but on the other side of the river, on Av17. They are in the process of putting in a walking trail that should be completed in September. From the parking garage in the rear of the hotel, walk 50 mts west on av13, go north on c3a and follow it up to av17. Multistory white building with loads of glass. If it is not raining, Tournant Restaurant and Cafe does a nice afternoon coffee in their garden or on the balcony if it is just drizzling. You would never see the garden from the street. Cafe is attached to the east side of the hotel.

I also like to take a book and a thermos of coffee to Parque Nacional in the mornings. There are lots of trees, places to sit and sculptures. The Atlantic Train Station is to the east and adjacent to government offices to the west. Lots of tico foot traffic. Picture a cleaned up Parque Morazon without the beggars. (c1200 Uber from Taormina)

On rainy days, I vastly prefer Lincoln Plaza over San Pedro Mall. At Lincoln Plaza, the Cinepolis (English subtitles) has a nice coffee bar area. There is also a Starbucks by the main entrance. Lots of places to sit, drink coffee, and waste an afternoon. Good WiFi and some full size rocking chairs at several places. An inside Mas x Menos to pick up a few snacks for the hotel room. Large Uber friendly overhang (porte cochere) unlike San Pedro. (c2000 Uber from Taormina)

Good recommendations. I would add Parque Sabana on Sunday mornings to watch some local baseball games.

I stayed at Taormina last week. They told me they are planning to build a pool and a gym soon. Have no idea where they will put a pool.

In the meantime you can catch a train to Cartago or Alajuela and watch the scenery pass by.

LaAmistad has a (very) small sitting area outside the main entrance. The chairs aren't real comfortable, but its nice to have morning coffee while watching the world go by. Panhandlers occasionally approach, but staff does a good job of shooing them away. If around on a Saturday morning, there's a local farmers market a short walk away. Just hang a left and follow the train tracks about 1/4 mile or so (past the end of the street, there's a walking path), then you'll see a soccer filed below you on the right. The market is set up around that and you can't miss it.

Thanks brother.. I will be checking it out in less than one week... the only thing that I truly missed in my (last 7) visits to SJ.. was a 'cool' pool (and some good solid sunshine)
