COSTA RICA residents and tourists have been put on high alert and warned not to drink certain types of alcohol after nearly 20 people died from an infected liquor.

So far around 34 patients have been hospitalised as a result of the methanol-tainted alcohol. Of those 19 have died from the contaminated substance. According to News Breaking Live, those killed are aged between 32 and 72.

Local reports suggest that six different brands of alcohol have subsequently had warnings placed on them.

The brands were Guaro Montano; Aguardiente Barón Red; Aguardiente Timbuka; and Molotov Aguardiente.

The country’s health ministry suggested that some vendors were selling counterfeit products.

However, they said it was unclear whether this was done so knowingly, or unknowingly.

The ticos have been reporting this for a couple of weeks already and it just went international.

The tainted stuff has been identified as some cheap label guaro, and apparantly have been tainted by adding methanol to the bottles. Guaro is an inexpensive cane sugar liquor and is very common in latin america. Its also called arguiente, , and some others.

IMHO some of the cheap labels may have been hijacked and the idiots decided to cut it with methanol, before reselling it to local merchants. in my extensive experience with all available liquors in CR (wink, wink), it is healthier to buy from the well known stores, and the higher end hotels, restaurants, and bars. buying froma local dive bar or some joker on the street with a super price is to be avoided at all costs.

It is doubtful there is any quality concern from all our favorite places.

aguardiente has always made me think of stuff like night train and OE 800 etc
i tasted it once and it was pretty nasty and since its cheap people go for maximum buzz
problem w all that cheap stuff is the price you pay
think this is sort of the crack cocaine of alcohol
looking at those brands/bottles its hard to say why any sane person would lift them to their mouth

The article said that most of the people affected were homeless or alcoholics. These brands of guaro are not suitable for the majority of people, however, one of my travel agent clients just reported that they are receiving many cancellation from the US tourists over this scare.

Gentlemen,

No expats or tourist have died from drinking this bootleg liquor.

No Hotels or Cruise Ships that I know of sell this liquor however in the red-Zones maybe?
Reports indicate that it`s something that the local police are working on and the tainted booze is being trafficted by the local narco gangs.

Bill

Thanks for the information Bill. I know you run a tight ship at Sportsmen Lodge and that's the reason that I only stay there during my vacations to Costa Rica. I know that Dominican Republic has a huge tourist problem with the recent deaths from drinking alcohol. I posted this to find out if anyone currently in San Jose had an update.

Here's a link with pictures of the booze that's in question - these are not brands you're going to see in any bar frequented by CRT members:

Bill is, of course, correct.

So far, apparently, in Costa Rica it's been limited to the kind of guaro only the pants-shitting, staggering dregs of alcoholic society would guzzle.

The other side of the coin is that counterfeit liquor and even beer is a huge problem in many countries. We have all heard of the Mexican incidents (because those were US tourists) and it's a prime suspect in the DR deaths.

And those were tourists.

It's a real problem in China.

part of the mis-information was reported on fox news , who reported that some tourists were affected and claimed CR to be an island. We all know the real story

The embassy reported it properly

Yes but CR is an island of earthly delights.
Except for the guaro.
I prefer to poison myself with Imperial.

At least one tourist thinks he got some.

Dominican tourism is hurting. Resorts closing.

On the bright side might be a good time to buy property.
