Just wondering what the colone whisperers are thinking now about the current value of the colone 575 and the state of the CR economy.
Many predicted that the colone would be at 800 now and the CR economy would have collapsed by now?.

Costa Rica got a big international loan / grant. The central bank is dumping dollars to stablize the colone. They can't keep it up.

Yes they recently got a loan for 500 mil $. Only a small interest rate of 20%.
And some new vat taxes go into effect on July 1st.
But somehow CR keeps limping along.

The exchange rate can be misleading.
At first it seems that the dollar goes further, then inflation and government corrections hit the prices in colones, and the only losers are those people paid in colones for their hard work. Dollar users just say "oh well" let's move along.
Below are just a few observations, from personal knowledge. You decide which way to go.
-20 yrs ago, the ladies asked for $100 at the HDR, the exchange rate was 283 to 1 . Now they will go for less than $100 and the exchange rate is closer to 600 to 1. Go figure who wins or loses in this scenario ?!?
- Many of the home mortgages, car loans, import and export contracts, hgher end real estate rentals, and such are in dollars, and many middle class ticos have 2 bank accounts. one in dollars and another in colones.
- when the exchange rate goes to 600-1, the losers are those paid in colones and have their loans in dollars.
-Eventually the government must engineer the exchange rates, somehow, so the importers and exporters don't take such a hard hit, and to keep some sort of equilibrium on government and personal loan payments that are due with dollars.
- Both Ecuador and El Salvador switched to the dollar as their local currencies in order to make more sense of all the variables in managing exchange rates and outstanding loans and such.

Of course it's better to move around in CR with a US based income, and there are opportunities for discounts and deals using dollars versus colones, or vice versa; but in the end CR has become more expensive for everyone.

Haha, jokesters all.

I suspect some of you critics are retired fry cooks and taxi drivers, not much understanding of business cycles and currency fluctuations, so it's easy for you to misunderstand what's happening, allow me to school you.

The truth is, CR cannot continue to maintain their tenuous hold. They recently got downgraded credit wise and keep desperately borrowing to keep afloat.

At some point, international lenders will stop handing them money they're unlikely to see returned, CR's economy is a Ponzi scheme.

It's a high speed tap dance CR is doing, and it can't be sustained.

When the music stops, you'll see the rates start heading back to mid 600's, maybe more.

I'll predict it should be end of this year, but if they keep finding greedy high rate lenders with more money than sense, they might just hold off another year, but that's it.

Now the USA is doing the same, in fact much worse, but we can keep printing our money and if we implode, the world implodes.

CR is like Greece, it can implode and the world yawns.

LaDildo, you can't seem to just drop your neurotic obsession with the little beans n rice joke I made in another post. It's time to move on...

Obsessions are a sign of psychosis, you know...

Huh, fry cooks and taxi drivers speaking out of their assess about matters of the economy, huh?

Let me school you.

There are several diagnosis which are considered psychotic disorders-the most common two are schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The main diagnostic criteria for each are not obsession, although some variants of bipolar disorder can, during manic cycles, include some obsessiveness. Obsessions are far more closely linked to various constellations of anxiety disorders, sometimes addictive disorders, or personality disorders. None of which are psychotic disorders.

Just saying, fry cool

My next door neighbor is Ken Fisher and Kitty Corner, across the street, is Charles Schwab. So, I can say, with confidence, Netgems knows what he's talking about.......

I'm glad you say so, because I've been just b.s.ing all this time...

Seriously, I admit, that I (and I had a lot of company) thought we'd see 650 by now, but it seems the old aristocracy that controls the crc's here had one last tap dance to play before being yanked off stage.

It's real simple, you don't need an MBA to figure it out.

CR spends a lot more than it takes in and the socialist democracy tax and spend system here is not conducive to international business, I think we all have heard stories of businesses pulling out and going to Nicaragua, Colombia, or even back to the USA.

10 years ago I managed a call center here out of a group of call centers, maybe 10 or so. N Americans and Canadians held the management positions but Ticos held most of the support positions, we had about 100 good paying jobs, $1,000 to $2,500 a month for different sales and support positions.

C.R. harassed them so much they moved to Singapore, many Southeast Asian countries welcome these companies that produce middle class jobs with tax breaks and other incentives, but here, they just want to bleed them dry.

The US economy is booming and looking strong at least for what can be seen across the horizon, even though we owe much more than them proportionately, lol.

The CRC HAS to start devaluing someday, now its just a betting game as to when. :?

ROFL. The ability to read a title and the decontexualzed use of google scholar is a dangerous tool for the know-it-all.

It it is funny how others give you a little playful shit back, and your response you call them out as being angry. Others were teasing you on your proclivity toward coming across as the world's leader in all.
