I stayed there for a few days in Feb 2019 and offer the following:

Pros: Decent price (about $70/night booked on Hotels.com); clean room and bed/linens; hot & cold water both work; I think most if not all rooms have been recently renovated, fridge in room; flat screen TV w/half dozen English-speaking channels, including CNN so I could keep up with what a disaster Trump is lol; beer on-site/bars at both Italian restaurant, and "sports" bar; valet stand out front sells condoms (3pack for 5mil) and Viagra (don't know price); deep in the gulch within blocks of numerous pensions, Del Rey, SL, etc.; operates like a normal hotel, with 24/7 front desk service, daily room clean, etc.; chica friendly.

Cons: at bottom of gulch hill - need to walk up two steep blocks to get to most places. Chicas that frequent are typically chunky 5s & 6s; Lobby is small and no good place to hang out and read a paper, book, work on computer, etc. - they have two couches, but they are right in the middle of all the busy hotel lobby action, not private and/or quiet at all. Also, no outdoor commons area or pool, so if you're looking for some place on-premises outside your room to relax, you're out of luck (unless you consider sitting in a bar or "casino" relaxing - I don't); Casino and sports bar are kinda lame.

For the reasons above, I think I'm going to check out hotel Santo Thomas, Hotel Don Carlos, and maybe others prior to my next trip. Neither of those are chica friendly, but that doesn't matter to me, as I monger primarily at pensions...

Why not just stay at the Holiday Inn Aurola? Or the Presidente? Or the Balmoral? Or the Grand Hotel?

Or Casa 69.

Your 'cons' are kind of 'not convincing'.

Perfect!, as I wasn’t trying to be “convincing” either way, I will take that as an”good job”. As far the other hotels you reference, if they are at about the same price point, and have what is important to ME, then perhaps I will check them out. Thanks

additionally, i don't think the staff has gotten use to seeing gringos strolling in with ticas. it's like all of the lobby folk stare at you. then you have to walk past the casino to the elevator and they stare. it kind of bothered me. but to each it's own.

In that they sell condoms and viagra at the valet stand out front, and clearly allow chicas to hang out in the sports bar and the casino (which is wide open and next to the lobby and elevators), I’d say they are probably used to us w/chicas by now. In fact, I had to sign Vanessa in at the front desk. They had a clipboard with a list of who is going to to who’s room. There were a LOT of entries on the list ahead of us... Perhaps you slipped passed that checkpoint. I do agree, with the business being done right there with everyone to see, and the whole signing her in at front desk, and buying condoms with her at the valet stand, was all kinda awkward. It took a good few imperials before I was at the point of saying WTF and going for it all...

If you think that's awkward then you should stay at the Sleep Inn. Where they make you fill out a form with your passport number. And the entire desk crew reviews it before it goes back to the manager.

The Castillo and the Amistad take the girls' cedula (ID). The SL signs girls in and searches their purses.

It's for your "security". Well, not the the Sleep Inn nonsense - that's a passive-aggressive way to discourage 'guests' without saying 'no guests' (plus collect a $35 fee).

And why are you buying condoms in Costa Rica? Durex are shit. Might as well use an old inner tube (and the German-made "masculan" aren't any better).

did you go across the street to the Dunn Inn and check it out, from what I recall they have some of the amenities you felt were missing. They are not chica friendly.

I think Don Carlos Hotel will suit you if you do all mongering at pensions. In fact New Fantasy or Divas or what ever it is called now is right across the street and open every day.
The hotel is what is called a boutique hotel with a mini museum of old artefacts and a little gift shop. Very relaxing place.

Actually the Don Carlos Hotel might not suit him. There is no pool and the lobby is basically a gift shop.

Sao Thomas Hotel and "Wellness Center" has a "pool" (a hot tub with delusions of grandeur), plus it has a number of "enjoyable public spaces" (seating areas) as seen on their website.

The Holiday Inn Aurola (the downtown Holiday Inn) has an indoor pool; a business center; and some "enjoyable public space" in the lobby that's more than two couches.

Then he can complain about the stench of patchouli oil and old people.
