A couple was arrested as suspects of the crime of proxenetismo (pimping) women in a house located in the upscale community of Pinares de Curridabat, in the east side of San Jose.

According to the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), on a confidential tip, they raided the house where the couple used the services of up to 11 women to offer clients sexual services, for which they charged around ¢30,000 colones (US$50) for up to one hour. The women then paid the “house” their cut.

The OIJ believe the house full of women of ill repute (hookers) operated since the middle of 2018.

Three women, all of age, were found in the house at the time of the raid by agents of the Crimes Section Against Physical Integrity Trafficking and Human Trafficking of the OIJ.

I'm guessing they only got busted because it wasn't an "official" brothel? Like an MP

No, they were busted because they were pimping*. Pimping is illegal in Costa Rica. So is pandering.**

There are no "offical brothels" in Costa Rica. A brothel would be illegal because its owners would be pandering.

Prostitution in Costa Rica is legal. Women (etc.) have to be independents (working for themselves, not working for a pimp). No one can (legally) make money off the girl providing sex except the girl.

The "MPs" are technically pensions (rooming houses) where girls hang out and when someone wants their company they technically rent a room for a period of time. If the 'rate' is CRC30K and the girl has to pay CRC15K for the room then she's not getting paid for the sex by the pension.

That's why you can never be sure what girls and how many will be working in (not 'at') a certain sala on a given day. Its completely their choice - they aren't employees (like they would be in a brothel).

*A pimp is a person who provides prostitutes and gets the money from the act .
** Pandering is the act of procuring customers for the prostitute, for a portion of the money.
