As a long-time user of both, I switched to the Castillo as soon as it opened.

Why?

It isn't the management as Matt owns both and Darren does a great job.

First, I like the intimate bar at La Amistad and the food (but I think it's good at both).

La Amistad is quirky. That's not a reflection on Matt - it was that way when he bought it. Stairs here, stairs there. Rooms with bathrooms with no place to put a razor at the sink... And the train. Again, I stayed there religiously for years because I enjoyed it. Laid back and hassle free.

Castillo.

First, the staff there is just as great as the staff at La Amistad. I miss Patricia at the front desk and Monica behind the bar but que sera sera.

The rooms in the 'new' part are more functional. The penthouses are awesome. The two king balcony rooms are breezy and quiet (okay - zoo bird noise). The rooms on the 'old' street side may be quirky, but they aren't "Hans, how can we shove another room in here?" quirky the way the LA's original owners cut it up.

The bar is different but also good. Food I already mentioned.

To me, it's like asking if you like one top shelf bourbon over another. It's degrees. And you aren't going wrong either way.

The male bartender at the LA always seemed pissed off to me.

You must spend a lot of time pointing out 'non-informational' posts on this site!

Try room 202 at the LA It is located up the first set of stairs on the left as you enter. It has a huge jacuzzi and five windows which you can open and let the breeze in It is at the front of the hotel

3rd floor penthouses are more like party rooms to entertain
only the top 312? has a balcony...
310 is a loft
311 is 1 br apt with a huge useless gourmet kitchen

2nd floor penthouses are glorified kings

saunas and jacuzzis may or may not be functional

Amistad is a great place, i prefer it over castillo for the character despite the building's quirks, the staff is great, and the other mongerers who stay there tend to be interesting people
