If you live in country and receive USD deposits, more bang for your buck. Someone said the published websites do not give you the same exchange rate but BCR has a usd to CRC of 589.5 for their purchase rate on their website; that's on par with the published website exchange rates. Who said what again?
I think you are the one who needs to look again!! The bank rate as stated for BCR at closing today on their web site is:
$US purchase (which means what they sale colones for in exchange for dollars) is 576.5 They are purchasing dollars!!
$US sale (which is what they sale dollars for in exchange for colones) is 589.5 They are selling dollars!!!!
BCCR (the national bank) put $31,000,000 into the system last week which was/is suppose to stabilize the rate and keep the colon from going down! This has worked (in the short term) for the past few years. This time it has not! It has dropped almost (the exchange rate for buying colones with dollars has gone up) 10 points in just over a week!!
Oh, and the EX exchange rate as of this afternoon for buying colones with dollars is 580.16 which is actually less than 4 points more than what you can actually get here in CR (depending on the bank) today if you are exchanging dollars for colones!! This is the lowest difference I have seen in a long time!! Also, when I say "depending on the bank" that is because there are 14 different banks, each setting their own rate, and a total of over 20 other institutions where you can exchange money. All of the rates vary from 574 to 578 except for Global exchange (the rip-off place at the airport) which is 499.77!!
If you do not believe what I have posted is correct, go to BCR first thing in the morning and try to get 589.5 colones for your dollar!! Good luck!! WHO SAID WHAT AGAIN????
