Make sure you keep some lube handy because the import taxes are going to make you sore. Also every now and then they make it extremely hard to get your vehicle from customs adding enough money to make it not worth getting the vehicle.

Good to know any honest shippers you know of in CR?

Dude,
don't do it. pay taxes on what the vehicle was worth when you purchased,
will cost you about 25% over what you payed.

These were the people I was going to use. Shipping a 1998 Chevy 4X4 flatbed, just the taxes alone were going to be between 4-5,000. Not worth it in my eyes.

I drove 2 vehicles down in 2006 and the taxes amounted to almost 50% of the value of the SUV and Pick-up. if I had it to do over, I would just buy a vehicle in San Jose because they put 25% on it when it's new and it just keeps depreciating with that original 25% on it. So if my math is right your saving 25% buying local in Costa Rica. I also bought a house on the beach in Guanacaste that turned into a nightmare string of robberies and would never do that again, just rent and not have to worry about what you might lose when not home.

Import duties on vehicles may exceed any reasonable valuation of the vehicle and will certainly be high.

Once the vehicle is "nationalized" you have the annual road tax (marchamo) and the safety inspection - neither are cheap.

And gas is ~$6 a gallon.

New vehicle prices in CR are more reasonable.
