I"m sorry to report the Chicas may have outnumbered the gringos 2 to 1 but they also outnumbered the gringos 3 to 1 in libras! Not in all cases but in many, many! San Jose will never be the same, ever. This will be my last trip for many years. I'm trying elsewhere, it cant get any worse except of course your one of those gringos that has a "Novia" and are starstruck by the 40 to 50 year old age difference!
And, believe me, they love you!!!

So I'm starting with Columbia! Then making my way to Ukraine and Russia and Thailand!

Agree 100% w setting up shop at SL and touring mps and DR etc. w other guys you meet at the SL bar
Most of us have just been at it too long and have higher expectations based on our past
So we complain about whats left of what we used to have which was pretty great
That has zero to do w a guy thats new to this thing
There are really nice sexy latinas willing to do pretty much whatever you want for the right price
More than likely you will fall in love w the place if only for a little while
I'll never forget my first trip and it was after only having TJ as a bell weather
You need to focus on not falling in love w one of these girls lol

Some good points made here. If the guy is new, if it's his first trip, then he has nothing to compare with. Even if the scene is say only 65 or 70 percent as great as it was, how would the new guy know?

My friend and I are traveling for the 1st time to CR and we were debating whether to stay in San Jose or Jaco. We are coming around the Presidents Day weekend in Feb. I know someone that went to Jaco (13 guys in a Villa) and they said they had a crazy time. But I think their experience might have been a little different because of the size of the group.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it safe to Airbnb (San Jose or Jaco)? We would like to have company for overnights when possible.

2. We also want to do some day-time activities like zip-lining and ATV. Is it better to stay in San Jose or Jaco?

3. Which place has the better food?

4. Which area has more options and company with better attitude (I know it can vary no matter where you are) ?

We would prefer to be near the airport but if Jaco is worth it for the view and the atmosphere, we don't mind going out. Thanks in advance.

Was my first time in CR recently myself. I stayed at La Amistad which was nice because you can bring girls back no charge and it's right down the street and around the corner from Sportsman lodge, so you have easy access to both hotels (although girls can't solicit or linger at Amistad). As for HDR I went there probably about 4 or 5 times. Honestly there was never a time I went or heard about it being dead unless it was during the day or sometime at like 3 or 4 in the morning. HDR is a bit too crowded even for me and like others have said, it was never outright packed when I went there but there was always a decent amount of women with a decent male to female ratio. But you also have to remember HDR charges you to bring up girls (I think $10-12? Not sure).

You're not going to be walking around at night unless you stick close to HDR. This was one drawback to staying in La Amistad. If I woke up around 2 am and wanted to find some action, SL was my only real option since it's hard to find a cab at 2 am by Amistad. And walking around at night is not safe at all, especially to HDR. However I liked Amistad because it was very relaxed, quiet, laid back, and no crowd. And it's easy enough (and cheaper) to bring a girl back to your hotel from HDR than staying at HDR IMO. And massage parlors are even cheaper if you want to get technical but that's besides the point.

Sportsmen closes at midnight generally so it’s not a venue at 2 am to search. If you want a cab froM Amistad, the front desk will call you one and it will be there within 5 minutes

safe to airbnb but suggest at staying at a hotel the first time
activity wise you might be better in jaco
food is marginal at best and the sodas(small local restaurants) are the best but basic food
probably going to find better attitudes in SJ since the girls in jaco are hit and run for the most part
jaco is not worth anything tourist wise. it is literally a shit hole town by the beach
plenty of nice beaches in CR but this is not one of them
as i said earlier if this is your first time in you will be happy staying in SJ for the most part
if you want to see some of the country take a ride to jaco its something to do
very little to be found walking around SJ in my opinion but its a diversion from booze and whores

Don't let any THING stop you if you are gimped up. The HDR will treat you very well and you can do 2-3 ladies if you are man enough a night and rather than be using taxis or Uber and walking then the upgrade fee is nothing!.When you have had your fill then there are plenty of women that will treat you like a Rock Star and it is a blast to just say no. The upgrade fee is nothing when comparing, safety, easy access to ladies, Security treats you very well etc. The HDR is ground ZERO of the GULCH.

Thanks for the responses everybody. We are still planning but the rough plan looks like this.

We are landing Friday around 8 AM and heading to Jaco from there. We plan to get a Villa (still looking to book - recommendation welcome). We would like to do zip-lining and ATVing; possibly other activities depending on the mood during the morning/afternoon hours. I think both of us would prefer reliable company that can be repeated during our stay at Jaco.

We then plan to leave Jaco on Sunday late morning/early afternoon. Leaving Sunday and Monday. We are looking for more variety in SJ dedicated to company and good food. Possibly staying in La Amistad based recommendations here.

What do you guys think? Recommendations are welcome off-course. Thanks in advance.

1st time in CR and only 4 days split between Jaco and SJ, I would forget about Zip Lining and other tourist stuff if you want to play with the Chicas. Your first time never go a smooth as planned.

a four day trip split between both is possible but only if you want just a taste of both.

You are arriving Friday morning, assuming nothing out of the ordinary happens you could be in Jaco by noon. Finding a late afternoon tour on short notice may or not be possible plus most guys want to get freshened up for the first night. Maybe explore the town a bit, hit the beach. You could go to one of the hotels or store front kiosks and find out what tours are available and book one for Saturday or Sunday.
You won't find much daytime chica activity in Jaco, there is basically one place, the Cocal, there may be some chicas there during the day but it doesn't pick up until 7-8pm.
Finding one girl for the weekend can get expensive quick, can you communicate, using google translate all the time can be a pain. Plus most guys look for a little variety
Food is more expensive in Jaco
Sunday and Monday are the slowest days for chicas in Jaco and San Jose
