4-5k colones each way from Heredia to the gulch at 10 am / 4 pm on next Tuesday

Is that an Uber quote?

Yes. Uber. You can plug in time and date and it gives you that.

Paid 7k from SJO to Castillo at 2 pm last trip in mid December. Hit all the traffic in town and quote never changed

Versatile, other than your BIL, what would an estimate for a red taxi charge for the same route?

Taxi Fare Estimator says ₡ 12,726. That's based on distance using the metered rate at the current travel time. Traffic would cause it to go up.

Mi novia and I Ubered to Cartago (to the Paseo Metrópoli mall to see Thor) in December. It was like ₡ 8,144 going and ₡ 7,470 coming back (from the Castillo). Taxi is ₡ 14,906 with 'normal' traffic and ₡ 16,776 with 'heavy' traffic.

And an example by meter and distance taxi fare from Centro Heredia to Centro San Jose (Del Ray, Parque Morazan) is ₡ 8,134. That's $14.37 US (today, more-or-less). For a round trip of less than $29 US. Not $56 (₡ 31,679 today).

Uber gives a price of ₡ 4,959.85 or about $8.76.

Full disclosure, Uber has 'surge pricing' when there is a high demand. I've paid it in the US when I was stuck in ATL last spring when Delta had their melt down, but I've never seen it in San Jose (unless our trip to Cartago was the surge pricing as it was ₡ 1,000 or so more and it was (arguably) "rush hour".

But the price that comes up on the app is what I pay. If it says ₡ 1000 when I put in the trip then I pay ₡ 1000.

When I went down last Uber didn't exist and I never had a problem with Taxis. I just went straight to my hotel. I used to walk from Sportsmen's to the Del Rey (during daylight only) and used the ATM at the bank between the two.

I had a few girls I've road with either to eat or somewhere use Uber. Most the uber drivers I meet were pretty scared and explaining that we have to look like friends. It was like 3-4 of them said this my last trip only a week ago.

I've been using red/orange(i'm colorblind) taxing for 7 years and never had a problem. I also never had a problem with the Uber drivers my girls got on recent visits. After reading this thread though makes me wonder if they have been recently cracking down on Uber drivers since these guys I meant were worried.

Always greet them by first name like you know them when they arrive, sit in front seat. I have used them from the airport 4 times this year and no issues
