Is UBER legal yet. The last i read on Dec7th UBER is still illegal.
I googled this this morning.

As a result of recent rulings by the Costa Rican Supreme Court that enforced the government regulation of the taxi services in Costa Rica the government of President Luis Guillermo Solis has officially announced by way of the Minister of Public Transportation that ” We shall formally declare the absolute illegality of any form of public transport that uses the Uber platform or any other.” Based on this it is clear that the current government is taking the position that the use of Uber in Costa Rica is not legal. Any Uber driver that is caught carrying a passenger is now subject to a fine of 160,000 Colones and the vehicle will be taken out of circulation. On the other hand Uber Costa Rica continues its position that the platform is legal and will continue to defend its drivers.

You might be standing by the side of the road waiting for a Red Taxis.AFTER THEY CONFISCATE THE uber vehicle. Imagine standing at a toll booth on your way to the airport and the Uber vehicle you were riding in just got confiscated! Imagine that the UBER vehicle has a flat and the policia confiscate the vehicle along side the road. Baggage or not a Gringo is a great target for robbery standing along the road to the airport or at night on a dark street.

Has anyone at the Delrey got you a UBER DRIVER.? As a newbie do you know how to get an UBER DRIVER? Why ride with a person that is breaking Costa Rican laws? Why would a Policia want to help a gringo Uber passenger .As i said my sis- in= law is a cop and why would she want to help someone that is participating in an illegal business and stealing a passenger from her brother or friend?

TAXIS AND UBER DRIVERS GET INTO IT and it is possible to get involved with a Taxis driver and Uber driver.fight with a brick thrown into your window.

I have used Uber in the CR for the last 2 years & have yet to have a problem. I have used the red taxis for the last 7 years & it would 10 pages to explain the BS I have gone thru with them. Uber has an app for your phone. There is no need to have anyone at the HDR get you an Uber. In el Centro there are a myriad of Uber drivers circling the city center at any time. They may not pick up at the HDR for fear of BS by the red taxi drivers, I don't know. Bad mouth them all you want, but 0 Uber problems vs. problems just about every time I get into a red cab......I'll take Uber whenever possible.

Versatile, I think you have pretty much lost credibility with everyone who knows just a little about San Jose. You say you have seen no trickery from taxi drivers, and then recommend getting a taxi waiting outside the HDR. It is almost a certainty that those taxi drivers will engage in trickery. Maybe you have had very little experience with taxis, but after 14 years, that seems unlikely, even though you now have your own vehicle.

I have limited experience with San Jose taxis, but I have experienced fast meters, meters not turned on, and drivers taking unnecessary long routes just to run up the fare.

Some people are chumps and some are not and sure some taxis drivers will recognise a chump and take advantage. Please note the title of my thread" Taxis are cheap transportation. Except!

How about an uber lover get a quote tomorrow for a 10am trip from the Delrey to Parque De Central De Heredia.AND then the fare cost to return at 4 pm! That is close to our apartment. I would be very interested in the fare cost. Since you say my credibility is no good let's have someone else do it. Anyone game? Make it at 10 am since that is the time we used the red taxis when we went to the delrey

I think you may have been turbo'd. Has happened to me...a fare that should have been minimum was 2 or 3 times what it should have been. But...if you sat in traffic jam for an hour or two...maybe it would get that high.

So now i'm to blame for rip-off taxistas. OK! No clue how you extrapolated that. Every issue I've ever had with a taxi has been echoed throughout this board since I started reading it. I guess to not be a chump, I should start a fight with a taxista who just pulled the 20k - 2k bill switcheroo in the middle of the night, with no one around, my bags still in the back seat & 2 gates to get thru to get to my apt.??

You can defend these crooks all you want, but the consensus is there are a lot of crooks who will try to ripoff gringos every chance they get. To deny this is to keep your head in the sand and not acknowledge the obvious.

The whole premise of my post is about Newbies using taxis and not about UBER! WHY DON'T YOU WITH ALL YOUR INFINITE WISDOM START YOUR OWN UBER THREAD?

We don't want to, your thread is about taxis & you responded to the question "Why the heck aren't you using Uber?" so that's how the Uber thing got started.


At THIS TIME uber is still an illegal service in CR and you actually could find yourself standing alongside the road! you cannot deny that!

So don't use it & you'll be fine. I'll take my chances....again 0 problems vs. a ton of problems.
And to say "Some taxi drivers will recognize a chump and take advantage." Really?? So you are giving them an excuse to be a crook. That is enabling them. You might as well have said, "If they can take advantage of you they should!" This also indicates that you acknowledge there is a problem with the red taxis. Maybe your BIL isn't one of them but I'm glad you finally admitted to knowing there is a problem.
