I believe you read one of the posts about how I thought that a young newbie would have
a hard time adjusting back to normal American women and traditional relationships.
You are phucked for life. Most people that have never been to such a place do not understand.
There are some that say it would not change me. I doubt that . It is like wanting to be a virgin again, you cannot undo it.

I've stayed in the area for the past 6 years or so (SL, Castillo, Amistad) and during the daytime you can walk anywhere. Up until about 8:30 or so, I've always felt comfortable walking from the SL down to the Del Rey, past the INS building but you will probably have to dodge a couple of trannies by the park. After 8:30 or so, it's taxis everywhere. The only time I was ever really accosted was just outside of the Castillo. Was returning with a lady pretty late from Key Largo and the Taxi driver "overshot" the hotel by a block or so. Instead of having him drive around to get back to the entrance (because of the 1-way streets), I stupidly got out with the chica and we started walking the block or so back to the Castillo. We hadn't gone 50 yards or so before some cracked out youngster jumps out wielding some kind of a blade blabbering something about dinero. I was ready to give the clown everything I had on me when the girl started in on him in rapid fire Spanish. She then leans over to me and says give him 2 mil. I pull a 2 mil from my pocket, give it to her, she gives it to him and he runs off. Needless to say, she got a nice propina that evening.

Don't walk late at night anywhere in San Jose. Cabs are way too cheap to risk it.

IMHO if you can not afford 10-20 bucks (USD) a day for taxis (and you will probably never need that much) can you really afford to come to San Jose to play ?

I really don't think it's a matter of saving money. I just think guys could do better with a walk, especially after sitting in a bar for 6 hrs and especially if you're over 250.

I'm not recommending this to anyone... but I always walk...everywhere, day, night...up to around 11 PM. After that I'm more particular. I lived in an apartment on ave. central...and that walking street was the scariest part late at night. Had beggars approach me...and I let them know with a firm No that it wasn't a good idea.

I'm relatively fit...not at all interested in fighting or anything...I can run very well if needed (ie if I see a knife), carry limited cash which I would happily part with if someone pulls a gun. But I've never had trouble...other than in taxis.

But it seems really silly to me to consider a taxi from Dunn to HLH.. or Amistad to SL... or from Taormina to Z2 or HLH...these are all basically a block. Get someone to walk with you if you are concerned, or a cab if you wish. If you are drunk, disabled in any way, or cannot walk up a hill for example...by all means take a taxi. Drunks will get ripped off...I almost guarantee that. But if you are reasonably sober, relatively fit... just be alert, get to know the parking guys, etc. walk briskly...

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING WILL ROBINSON!

DANGER! DANGER! DANGER! https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/or ... da4357.jpg

You still may have time to cancel your reservation! I heard rumors Dunn Inn is chica and monger unfriendly now and no chicas allowed!

Can anyone confirm this??? :?: :?: :?:

You may want to check with the hotel, I could be wrong, but I've heard this rumor FROM SEVERAL SOURCES!

I've been staying at HDR since 2005, coming this Nov 8 thru 10, never a safety concern. The hotel has the best security in town and the characters hanging around are usually harmless moochers or trying to hustle something, if you indicate you're not interested they leave you alone. :x

I walk all over in the daytime between HDR, SL, Zona, never an issue, cab at night recommended. IF "safety" is your concern, HDR is actually the best choice, security guards strict, safes in rooms, chicas have to show their i.d., their info is recorded, real names, etc.

Plus if you hunt in the evening, they're basically all there, pick one and go up the elevator to your room, no running around at night necessary. 8)

Ref the Dunn Inn warning, i believe its been there policy for about a year now, based on discussions here

It's ok. The OP booked in 2012. The DI was chica friendly back then. I do like the warning tho.

LOL... I generally know what corners they are on... also, if there are more than 2 in one place I never get close. Also, I'm not young but can still do a 12-13 sec. 100 yards... probably 10.5 if a tranny is behind me. So if I have a 10 yard head start...they are in high heels (at least to start with)...no reason for them to try to chase me down. They won't even be able to see me by the time they do the first 10 yards to where I was.

I may be lucky but in my evening walks between HDR, Zona and SL, this was years ago and I don't recommend anyone do it now, I was a lot younger then, probably will take a taxi after dark now, but I always walked fast on the main streets and never responded to their calls, no comments, kept on walking, staring straight ahead and they never bothered me....if you start to interact, or end up on a dark side street or in the park, that's when you've made your mistake...

The 1 that threw the bottle of orange soda that whizzed by my head could be a major league pitcher!
