I have been to San Jose twice last year. Once in the middle of June and once in October. Because of changing jobs and a friend of mine getting time off of his work to come down we may not be able to go until July 4th week. How rainy is it normally at that time? I believe the rainy season starts in May but i think it does not get torrential down pours until later in the year. When i was there in June it rained a little in the afternoon and sometimes at night but not very heavily normally.

May through November is the wet season, July is right in the middle of it. You will probably get some days with only a storm or a shower but also a couple all day rains. But trust me if it is sunny all day you will wish it was raining because it is crazy hot in Jaco, much milder in the central valley. Have fun!

The rainy season actually started kind of early this year and has not been kind to us, especially the last 3 or 4 weeks. We have had a lot of minor flooding and mud slides. In fact it has been the most rain I have seen here in 12 years.

As for what it will be like the week of July 4, who knows?? Could be "normal" (what is "normal"), could be dry, or it could be like the last week with hours of rain most days and 2-3 inches or more in many areas.

Just come, bring an umbrella, and have fun!!

I'll follow your advice with the umbrella, but only between SL and HDR, the rest of the time I'll be wearing a raincoat en la cama. :D
