Am I making light of a serious situation - yes. It sure sounds like an old movie plot though. One that just isn't going to end well.

I have not followed this ordeal and I firmly belong to the school of thought that believes everyone should keep a low profile and not chat publicly about our diversions.

I jest because I can only imagine that the CR government wants this to go away already.

Sweep it under the rug....maybe they are giving him a chance to make a mistake which would put him away longer. I don't know. All seems peculiar to me.

In any event, I hope his mistake youtubing his adventures saves another gringo from doing the same...

It doesn't take much imagination to wonder what the inside of a Costa Rican jail is like!

I wish every gringo in trouble abroad, Godspeed back to the USA.

No news on whether he was freed pending the outcome of the appeal. The grounds for the appeal sound very strong...but I certainly am no expert on the process in Costa Rica. Hopefully he will keep his health...or what is left of it, and get safely back home.

Yes, to an extent he brought it on himself...but looking at all the information in a previous post (albeit from a website that appears to be supportive of him) it would seem that he should have a lot of grounds to win the appeal.

No one should underestimate the pressure that the US and US based charities are putting on the government of Costa Rica to make prostitution illegal. It is in the name of preventing human trafficking.... or exploitation of minors generally. But much money is given to Costa Rica organizations to fight these causes...and they have to find cases to justify the donations to them...and they can stretch a lot.

One "stretch" that I am acquainted with is the support payment. I left the country after the threat... but basically if you are deemed to have supported a woman and if she can show she was dependent on you she can claim you need to continue to provide support. Regardless of whether she had a Ch*ld with you or not, or even if you were never legally her partner. I was with one for 4 weeks...and a lawyer from one of these US supported organizations claimed she had a case. Now who knows how it would have turned out...but while you are waiting to go to court they assess what she needs for support...multiply if out for 13 months, and you have to post that to leave the country. And I bet you never get it back...even if you win the case. And the excuse is that you should have to support them forever...or 13 months at minimum...if you make the mistake of supporting them at all for a time. I got the hell out of Dodge.

3rd world logic. Reason # gazillion why I could never live there.
