I know their cup of coffee price is a ripoff at 1000 colones...and the bartender looking at you as a cheap bastard for ordering a cup of joe, at 8:30 am no less

Go across the street to Tico Burger, open 24/7, coffee 300 or 350 Colones/ cup & actually pretty good.
I always get a cup or 2 to go then go back to the Lobby bar for the WI-Fi! Never a problem getting in
With coffee in the a.m.!!

I love that place, if you love greasy sloppy junk food, here's your heaven. Recommend the fried chicken sandwich, actually good size for the money and great sauce. I shared a table with a hot put a when it was real crowded once, it was casual and we had a good conversation, next thing I knew she was coming back to my room with me 8) What a country, you can pick up a hot POA "to go" at the fast food places!

This weekend I was in the Del Rey on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and the Cocal on Friday. The Del Rey was not bad either night but the Cocal was incredible. The Del Rey is still the main place to check in San Jose. You have to be patient but fantastic women walk through there nightly. When I am looking I always check to see what is there. If I don't find something interesting I may check elsewhere. San Jose is a great place to visit because of the Del Rey. It is the reason the Sportsman's, and L'Amistad are successful. It just requires being patient in your search. It is a hell of a lot easier to go there than to drive to Jaco.

Patience is the key at the HDR.
As a tourist it's the wild, wild west- just go for it.
But the more time one spends there, there is always something old, something new, something borrowed,etc.. showing up- day and night.
There are always the fixtures; those who've been there for years with hardened faces and practiced smiles, and then the dabblers; lastly there are new faces that are curious because their friends told them about it, and they are going to try their luck, either out of curiosity or necessity.
Patience.

My first visit to the HDR was in 2003. I have vacationed in CR and stayed there dozens of times up to 2015 and when I lived there 2007-2009 visited perhaps around 100 times. There have been some lousy days, there have been some incredible days, but since about 2005 I have been hearing and reading from different people that the HDR was over, shot, dead. Some theorized the HDR might be going to close down, some theorized different new hotels being opened would close down the HDR. Some swear up and down the rise of Jaco would close them down or leave only the ugly, the old, the fat, the nasty and jaded... :x

In spite of all of the insightful warnings, I have always been able to go there, and with the occasional bad day in the daytime, find something varying from a "C" grade, satisfactory to outstanding that I would see over and over and was incredible. I still stay in touch with two favorites I met there. I'm glad I'm too stupid to recognize all these problems and continue to hunt there... :D

Personally, I would take any Sunday, Monday or Tuesday night compared to any Wed, Thurs, Fri or Sat night any week of any year (except Easter/Christmas, New Year) in CR at the Del Rey or Cocal instead of where I live (Santa Cruz CA). For a dude at my age, to be able to have the kind of fun that I live for.. I just have to say I don't really understand what some of this 'crying' is about. If you (crybabys) have it so good where you live now, then why are you here reading this? If there is a better place (MDE, Thailand, Right Hand, etc.) well then just go there and be happy with it! For me, I will just keep trying to live with as much fun and female goodness that a guy can possibly have in one life, with the 'ways and means' that I have to work with! j99

I am a vet of Germany,Brazil, Mexico, Tampa! My first trip to CR was a month ago, came back last week for ten days, Friday , sat @HDR was good, made some new friends meet at new fantasy and Amistad ,incredible time alcasar for $60 on Sunday. Language barrier was a problem at Josephine's

Then off to Jaco where the lineup on Monday and Tuesday was great wed a little slow , I Did overspend on my first Columbian but all the others took cien or less, the police were shaking down lots of the drug dealers on the Main Street. Some of my fav are sadly way in the ps.

Even saw my first MP girl ever working the crowd at Cocal asking for $150 lol.

I always pay in colones but this country is still not cheap. So have been checking all the MP so many girls to choose from service is hit and miss but price is good for the 1/2 hr.

Idem has some nice girls but unless you pay $100 for the nice room it is like pucking in a Tijuana street girl flophouse.

Back to SJ for the next weekend meet up with a few favs. HDR lineup for Saturday night was terrible IMO . had some nice sessions at Monica's and a young hard bodied stripper at Alcasar.

driver last month told me a new airport even closer to Jaco in the five yr plans?
also told by some Colombian vet monger that the girls at cocal were "forced" to ask for $150. Not sure if bs.

Back home in Indiana, thailand and Columbia are on my BL but will be back to CR in a few months.

Party Scene. ~Drugs , Alcohol gets me in enough trouble. :)

seen the same coked up guy with no shirt on from last month @ Cocal not sure how he made it out of the US or back in it!

Watched a few fight in Jaco, guy grabbed a knife from behind one of the bars but no one was stuck I think.

Some of the local expats think the PS will be the downfall of Cocal.

& no not the 'Pecker Scene' ,that is Alcasar where gringos like to get drunk and naked on the stage

I did an ATV and crocodile tour in Jaco both nice , sadly no Uber available and the Cocal wants to overcharge for a ride to close places, stick with the red taxi. Will stay at mango marr for a few days in may.
