Based on some recent reads/threads here I’m motivated to float a concept. I think it fits best in this section for the newer guys. Others might benefit too.

The concept is called freestyling.

Freestyling means not having it all planned out. It’s a conscious decision to: go with the flow, be flexible, and remain open to some element of chance. It’s a willingness to leave some measure of room for uncertainty. Freestyling also means putting in just a bit of effort on the ground to find your stride and have your own experiences, meaning unique to you. Cool right?

You’ve worked hard and are about to plunk down more than a little money for your trip. You’ve spent the last who knows how many days, weeks, months, years building up to the big moment. You want to lock it all in, so any measure to ensure a great trip is worth taking - from sights, to lodging, to meals, to chicas. All of it! If it can’t be set in advance on the web or through Whatsapp, it gets a pass.

I get it!

Here’s the thing, in my arguably limited experience, plans rarely survive the cab ride (if that long). Even with that bullet proof plan, things can and will change. Ever stay at a well-reviewed high end hotel but then the fire alarm goes off at 3:00 am? It happens. Ever go to a fancy restaurant and the server spills the drinks? It happens. Same for chicas, that hot piece everyone is ga-ga over shows up with a cold and muddles through it. It happens.

Freestyling does not mean going in cold and it is not a philosophy of just showing up and saying, ok now what? By all means do homework and get informed. I am a huge believer in homework. Yes, have something of a plan but be willing to do a little freestyling.

My best trip memories and encounters were not booked in advance.

No plan survives contact with the enemy (reality).

But you can repurpose, reshape and realize victory.

I book my flights, then I used to book a place or two to stay at. Next I decide what I wanted to do Fish, Spanish School, Ride ATV, etc. As for planning out chica time it is strictly go where it takes me no real plans unless I was trying to score with lady I met at the mall, restaurant, bank etc.

I am anal about the flights in & out, and my hotel reservations. Other than that....

I just did San Francisco for my annual trip to see the Chinese New Year's Parade. It was a total freestyle. I traveled the city, walking, or public transportation. I walked about thirty miles, and lost 6.7 lbs. (damn those hills). I met some wonderful people, and blew a chance with a VGL Intel VP, in the city from Silicon Valley. I guess that I have been paying too long. My freestyle weekend in SF was great.

I do what I call the "Pine Ave. Pub Crawl" on Saturdays. I take the bus (so I can drink unlimitedly, or not), to Pine Ave. in Long Beach. I have been out from eleven in the morning, to two at night. It is the "hot" area of town. All of my Saturday's are now Freestyle. I go down to the downtown Long Beach area on Saturday's. A daily pass is only $ 2.50, so if I am feeling it I go to Belmont Shore (a beach hot-spot in Long Beach area). It has been amazing, and always freestyle. I had a bartender tell me that she wishes she could do what I am doing. Duh, you can, it is a total freestyle.

For too many years my life was very structured, with things I wanted most kept in their spaces. I was safe. The joy of finding something that is really fascinating and I never knew they existed, far outweighs the joy of doing what is my norm.

Health & happiness to all..........

Welcome fellow freestylers!

Here I thought I was the only one that shows up without sessions and every other damn thing pre booked.

The best experiences and stories come from freestyling. Join us!

I did freestyle in Granada, Nicaragua, last week.

We arrived at the bus terminal without hotel reservations on a Wednesday afternoon. We walked around in the hot, humid city for two hours, soaking wet, looking for a decent hotel for a decent price.

I don't like freestyle, especially for the first day in town.

Agreed, that takes the concept a bit too far.

Rac, what do you think of Granada as a place for a Gringo to live? Considering all factors

There are a lot of gringos who live in Granada. I guess they like it. I wouldn't like to live there because of the climate - - - often hot and humid.

If I was going to live in Nicaragua, I would prefer Esteli, in Northern Nicaragua. There are a lot of gringos there, too; and the weather is better.

But the overriding factor is where my Sweet Nica will be..... Right now, in San Jose. Next year, possibly near Matagalpa, Nicaragua, where she owns a house free and clear. When I'm with her, the weather doesn't matter. Really, NOTHING else matters.

"FREESTYLING"??? In the world of "MONGERING" I did not know there was any other way!!!  Yes, you should ALWAYS, and I do mean "ALWAYS" book your flight as early as possible and then ASAP book your hotel. Exception: if your destination is known to have a lot of hotel rooms that cater to us mongers, and you want to check out your options when you arrive. Even then I would prefer to book a room and switch after arrival if desired.

As for non hobby things like tours, yes you might plan them in advance also. But expect to very possibly wish you had planned the tour for a different time once you start meeting chicas!!

As for mongering, forget having any plans! 99% of the time those plans just get in the way (and often canceled) once your "feet on the ground"! For sure they will lower the overall fun level. Over the years if I have heard it once I have heard it 1000 times: "Damn I wish I did not have a date with XXX! I just met this dream doll that is a 10, great attitude, will do it all, and for less money, AND today is the only time she is free. but being a nice guy I will honor my plans!" Whole trip is ruined because you cannot help but spend the rest of the trip thinking about "what might have been!"

Almost any true mongering destination will have more chicas available than you can possibly do in a week or so. And guys you meet might also know of some new hot spot that you will want to check out. Never met a guy with no plans who did not end up having more fun than if his whole trip was planned out!!

RAC, My second trip to Granade (back before many of the hotels there stopped allowing "working chicas" in and there were a lot less tourist) I did what you did. Luckily it only took looking at 2 hotels before finding what I wanted. But even that was too much uncertainty, humidity, and heat. Oh, and by the way, "better not be MY girl"!!! jejeje Just kidding! My girl is also from Matagalpa! And mine has put a stop to my 55 years of mongering!!
