Just a heads up for those scheduled to arrive SJO between Jan. 21 and Mar. 7. The Rio Varilla bridge east bound lanes will be closed for 7 weeks. That means getting from the airport to centro will be a nightmare. You can expect 2 1/2 to 3 hour t rips. Those with late night arrivals may fare better.
Good luck

I am arriving on the 26th--surely there is another route that won't take that long!

I was told that it won't be closed the entire time, but it will be closed some portion of the time.

Unfortunately, no, there isn't another route that doesn't take that long. La Platina is a vital link between SJO and San José. Even if the route isn't normally that busy, it's going to be jammed with lots of other traffic avoiding La Platina.

I know a couple of guys who are helicoptering between SJO and the other side of the bridge. They're full on passengers, but that's a potential option. I talked to a couple of charter operators about running a "shuttle" between SJO and the Pavas airport, but they weren't interested. Maybe somebody with more experience in that field could convince them otherwise?

What if you're going to the airport? No problem?

You normally have to cross this bridge and it's closed, so it is a problem.

I will check with our car service as to what they physically saw moving guests yesterday, but when they close have of a busy bridge it creates a traffic choke point.

So, regardless, if either the whole bridge or half is closed it will increase the time to get to and from Juan Santamaria.

There is another route from the airport going through Heredia and Santo Domingo but it's definitely a lot longer trip - 2 lane road with lots of local traffic.

Covered in first post. Our car service says Sat-Sun add about an hour. M-F add about 2 hours. Time of day and traffic will also impact.

Thanks for the heads up! I am arriving late the 24th and leaving early the 27th. May not be too bad for me. I have transportation scheduled through the SL. I will call them on the 22nd or the 23rd to see how bad things really are.
