I would suggest going to a game with the Costa Rican national team. You will see mostly guys that play in Europe like Keylor Navas at Real Madrid, Joel Campbell and Brian Ruiz who play for Sporting CP in Portugal, Celso Borges who plays in the top Spanish league (and almost scored on Navas last league game) as well as Brian Oviedo who plays in the Premiere League in England.

The National team games also solve the 'who to root for' problem as almost everyone in the National Stadium will be rooting for Costa Rica and as long as you do as well, you will be just fine.

Soccer has become a big sport for me but I only follow Real Madrid and the CR National squad. I'm still clueless on local stuff.
