Likely north in the country if it hits CR, more likely south Nicaragua, the mountain terrsin is of the most concern.. landslides, etc.

It appears that today, Tuesday, they are saying it will come onshore on Thanksgiving either in Costa Rica or southern Nicaragua. Either way, Costa Rica will be getting a LOT of rain.

Anyone that will be in CR from Thursday on should keep a close eye on this. There will be a LOT of closed roads, lots of places without power and the east (Atlantic) coast is already flooded before this even arrives. If you are gonna be here I'd recommend staying in San Jose. Anything outside San Jose and your risk of being stranded by closed roads, landslides and flooding goes way up. I'm going to stock up on groceries tomorrow...I've been stranded at my house for weeks at a time by landslides before.

PVT, Bang Bang, Pops, or anyone in SJO now-do you suggest flying in tonight? Got a coupla friends set to leave FLL on Spirit's late-night flight, then stay at SL. They are scrambling to get good intel.

Bill, is the SL making hurricane prep like we do here in South FL? Should guys stay here or fly in?

Thanks. I'll relay info to them.

My compadres cancelled their Thanksgiving trip from FLL to SJO. Didn't want to take any chances getting stuck & not getting back in the next 3-4 days. They got to Fort Lauderdale airport and Spirit was still loading passengers without notifying them about the hurricane or the possibility that Friday or Saturday return flights could be impacted.

Good luck & Godspeed to all you in CR as this once-in-170-years-plus event possibly occurs. We've learned in FL not to take these storms lightly.

There is a mandatory evacuation on the Caribbean coast from Limon north. We evacuated our two guests from the Lodge.

One projected track has Otto making landfall in Nicaragua just north of San Juan del Norte and heading due west with rain effects all the way down to San Jose. I don't think it will make it to hurricane status (stay a tropical storm).

I don't see this impacting flight operations at San Jose outside some time periods when the crosswinds will likely be too strong to permit landings/takeoffs. I also don't see it impacting much around San Jose outside some local flooding in certain places like two blocks south of Del Rey. No reason to cancel a trip to San Jose in the least.

However, travel outside San Jose can and will be impacted by landslides and road closures. If you are outside San Jose, the weekend will be messy but should be back to normal by Monday barring any major slides/blockages.

Let me just say that Purividatransport is a great guy! I know it's a little off topic but gave me a ride yesterday to Jaco and is keeping track of the weather report for me etc. Certainly will be using him in the future also. And no, I'm not a relative or anything. Just a satisfied client ! Thanks for keeping us posted, Steve.! Stay safe!!

SJO is not Florida, it sits in a valley (surrounded by mountains) at close to 4000 ft altitude...other that some wind and plenty of rain and perhaps localized flooding, it shouldn't disrupt anyone's international travel plans.

However, heed PVT's advise on road travel outside of the Central Valley...it will most likely get messy and unpredictable.

Have a happy thanksgiving!

I'm also arriving on Thursday 1:30 pm and going to Jaco straight, Do you think is going to be big issue to drive from San Jose to jaco (I've booked in some shuttle service there).

I lived through Hurricane Wilma. It was forecasted to be a Cat 1 but when it landed it was a strong Cat 2 sometimes going up to a Cat 3 at times. I was without power for 8 days and every tree in my complex (palm trees) were toppled. My office was destroyed as imbedded tornados blew out windows in downtown Fort Lauderdale office buildings. I had friends without power for over 2 weeks. It was a major Hurricane.

Same with me regarding Wilma.

Sent the family on the last Southwest flight out from FLL, then hunkered down as 60 mph winds swept down my street. Sounded like a jet engine at full power from 10 feet away, going slowly from right to left as I watched & listened from my bedroom window & saw it pick up wooden fence panels & blow them through the neighborhood. Power was out for 10 days here, but most people who stayed were ready.

We all hope Costa Rica's mountains disrupt the storm as it passes by and minimizes impact. But it's the aftermath that 's the concern, i.e., power & sanitation. Even with prepositioned "assets" like power workers in place immediately after storms like Wilma and this year's Matthew hit, it takes days and sometimes more than a week to restore power. If you're not ready for that, it can be a little tough.

Hopefully CR can be up & running again with no casualties & minimal damage.
