Finally! Heading down July 29-Aug 7. Most of the time I will be at the Presidente and I noticed they have laundry service.

I like to pack light and although I'm from FL I sweat at the drop of a hat. I also plan to party and have fun with a few side trips, a workout here and there of different types, and may change clothes at least twice in a day to stay fresh. Yet I don't want to bring 15 to 20 change of clothes. What do you guys do? Is there laundry down there?

There is a laundry about 2-3 blocks away. Its called the Sixaola. You can drop off your laundry in the morning and pick it up late afternoon. One normal load will run about 4 bucks. For a hotel, the Prez has decent laundry rates, but I would use the lavanderia.

If you get in a pinch... do a load by hand.

Point of interest: While I was staying at both Hot Del Rey and Morazon...their concierge crew always had amnesia when I asked them to point out a good laundry place in town. (hmm method there?)

Question: Do actual do it yourself coin laundry mats exist in San Jose or is it all service based?
As an independent type I don't like others washing my clothes.

Thats a good question, and one I've never been able to solve. I think I've walked every block in all directions from ground zero to 10 blocks away. I still haven't found a coin op laundry downtown. I've found them in Jaco. In Quepos. In Nicaragua even. It may be the "job creation" thing. We also seldom see a coke machine, a newspaper machine (they would steal all the papers anyway), etc. Having someone else do the clothes is a way to create a job. I'm convinced thats why we have to wait in a seperate line to pay an "exit stamp" tax at the airport. It creates about 7 jobs. Anyway, if anyone does find one, let us know. If not, the Sixaola has always done a good job on my clothes, and they probably fold them nicer than I would.

Washers & dryers seem to be a premium there because CR doesn't know how to build them domestically.

Hypothetical: Some CRT member with an entrepreneurial mindset could go to Sam's Club or Costco and by 10 washers & Dryers for about 400/ea. If said hombre could figure out a way to ship them to CR, then figure out a way to avoid getting thumped with import taxes-well then he'd be in business. There'd be a line of people. You'd recoup your investment fairly quickly....that is if you were so inclined.

Thats a lot of trouble to go through. Why not just go to Hipermas and buy a Whirlpool washer 175.990 colones ($367.00) and a Whirlpool dryer 130.890 ($273.00). No shipping, no import taxes and no hassle.

You're going to go to San Jose and spend hours in a laundromat?? I've been accused (once or twice) of being cheap, but I'll happily spend the $4/per load and find other things to do while someone else does the laundry.

Your're right Ding Dong. That would be much easier. I didn't see any appliance stores when I was there. That's a better price than Sam's Club. Guess, I didn't do the homework. spoke too soon.

No, I'm going to find one of those $4/load places. good point.

During my first trip to SJ I only fanned out in a limited radius around HDR. Next time I go down I'll look harder and wider out.
