I don't know if you guys are trying to tell me to go to the mansion because it's the first timer things to do or because you feel like I will have a better experience in Medellin.
It's the second.
The reason everyone is saying "For your first trip, start with the Mansion" is not just for safety. It's so you can get your feet wet
in a supportive environment in a city that doesn't cater to foreign mongers like, for example, Jaco or the Gringo Gulch or Pattaya.
Consider this - you're going to a city you've never been before. By your own admission, your Spanish is limited. Outside of other foreigners and Colombians who work in hotels, you will find almost NO ONE who can speak English - no taxi drivers, no store clerks, no police, no waiters, no random people on the street. And hardly any of the working paisas speak English. Medellin is not San Jose.
So how do you plan to find women (outside of asking CRTers for FB contacts?)?
Will your Spanish extend to knowing how to schedule an appointment and giving them your apartment address?
What will you do when the apartment security calls you to announce you have a "visitor" and (God Forbid) she didn't bring her
cedula?
Do you even know which MDE apartment rentals are "friendly" to this hobby?
If instead you decide to stay at a hotel, how will you know ahead of time if they even allow
prepagos?
And when you're not mongering, what do you plan to do with your day?
You're spending your hard earned money to go visit Medellin, presumably with the intent of having a good time. Your chances of achieving this will be a lot better if you:
a) stay in a place that caters to first time newbies (i.e. Mansion);
b) go down with an experienced wingman who can show you the ropes;
c) hook up with a local who can show you the ropes.
CRTers who stay in apartments have typically done one or more of the options above. In doing so they have developed networks of paisa providers and also have learned how to move around the city to get to places such as New Life or Mayorista or Fase 2. Certainly not impossible to do solo with little preparation on your first trip, but why make your life harder when you don't have to?
I personally have NEVER stayed at the Mansion, and will never do so. So if you think I'm shilling for my favorite hotel - I'm not. But I do recognize its value to newbies.
