This past few nights at the Del Rey I have witnessed a huge bloody fight that spilled in from the street into the side bar, also a shooting right at the main entrance that rumor has it ended in a fatality at Hospital Calderon Emergency.

An increased police presence was noticed in the Gulch this trip, especially at the Del Rey with multiple police sweeps.

Chica network says this is backlash from the recent Limon drug purge... Chicas who will remain unnamed say the girls are scared to work at night and the chica crowd this past week at the Del Rey and Sportsman seemed to reflect this.

In the numerous years Ive enjoyed the gulch, this is the first time im rethinking my future travel plans

Thoughts???
:(

Gentlemen,

There has been no such incidents at Sportsmens Lodge. I am not quite sure why Sportsmens was even mentioned here in this post, but we are concerned that if conditions do not become more safe at DR that the Municipalidad of San Jose will clamp down to the extent of challenging their existence and to their right to have a permit to operate.
Bar fights can happen when there is a large amount of alcohol consumed, however we do not feel that closing DR would be a positive thing to happen in the gulch. Del Rey must get a better handle on the type of customers entering the establishment. IMHO

Right!

Furthermore, closure of HDR would spell the end of the gulch as we know it, and a survival challenge for all peripheral gringo monger businesses, including SL.

HDR must better restrict and control access to its facilities, of both, chicas and clients to avoid these incidents.

Keep up the good work, SL...and good luck!

Bill,

Was not implying that the SL had any incidents, it was mentioned because the "night shift" chica population numbers seemed down, implying that perhaps the recent violence in the gulch is keeping chicas home in general. If anything I would figure the DR incidents would be driving gringo business over to SL where I'd feel safer.

The big fight did not involve DR customers inside, it started in the street and burst thru the door knocking over guys drinking in the back bar, spilling over back into the street and back inside multiple times.. the shooting was also non del rey customers and the Policia were on the block doing random cop searches and stop and frisks. The DR area is definitely attracting more of the wrong element, customers or not

Im wondering what more could be done by the city to curb the violence, doesnt seem like the DR has much power here

+1

We also have had no incidents at the Amistad. I think part of the problem in the DR Block are the gents that hang in front in the distribution business. Probably has nothing to do with The DR, but they should make an effort to clean up in front of the Hotel. Fights can happen in any location.

The crowds of street touts hawking 'viagra' (probably counterfeit), 'Cuban cigars' (obviously counterfeit). grass (God only knows what plant material it is) and all the other illicit substances in front of the HDR attract trouble. Only place I've ever been offered cocaine.

Some / many of them are selling actual drugs and that really means trouble.

To see the Fuzera Publica and the municipal police in the next block studiously looking the other way may explain a lot. The police should do sweeps and cart all those fucks off to jail, but they don't and a suspicious man would think they are paid to look the other way.

The HDR should pay the cops to run them off.

Col Ingus,

I do appreciate the clarification and believe we all are concerned about the safety of locals and our friends that travel to San Jose to enjoy themselves in the gulch area. I believe this can be cleaned up by a properly directed effort by the local authorities.

Thanks,
Bill

Perhaps the local authorities are too busy incarcerating and prosecuting senior gringo mongers who stupidly blog about their hobby...they don't have the resources or ability to be chasing the local riff raff that loiters and deals in the vicinity of HDR

I witnessed the fight Col Ingus mentioned. I can tell you it was ugly not just some bar fight.. I was also at the Del Rey in the early morning hours when the shooting happened, very scary situation.. I spoke with several chica's the general feeling is one of fear.. I've spent the last week passing through SL multiple times throughout the day and there's hardly anyone there mostly just a few guys.. It seems to me that the chicas would be lined up to get in.. I prefer SL because it is safe but if I just want to watch sports and hang with the guys I can do that at home.. I know all about the MPs but sometimes you want to meet them at the bar for me that adds to the experience..Thoughts?

the past week... definitely was much more police cleaning up the DR area and alot less drug dealers, gypsy cabs, hawkers etc...
there was also a lot less chicas, and alot less gringos...

on this trip i for one, tended to go out at night less, and partook in more daytime activities.. having regulars made the trip a success

It may just be my warped way of thinking, but I think the cops should do that without needing to be paid since it is their job.

I think he meant to pay the cops to be extra vicious in making sure these 'law-abiding citizens' know that they are not welcome in the area. That is in the HDR's best interest.

Actually, based on my observation, the Fuzera Publica and the San Jose metropolitan police standing around in the vicinity of the HDR normally aren't doing their job (as Orange put it) - either because they're getting protection money to look they other way or they just don't care.

So, either somebody makes them care (politically) or someone pays them to do their job.

Apparently someone had enough juice to make them care (for a while).
