For those looking for some alternative transportation choices Uber is now operating in Costa Rica. I'm currently at the time of this post in ground zero ... or a piece of heaven on earth we call Costa Rica lol and have been using it pretty extensively. Below are my takes:
The good.
-It's Uber so you know it's credit card not like the many taxis that don't ... or the taxis trying to no use the maria and gringo gouge us.
-If the Uber app finds the address they already have it so no having to try to explain where you want to go.
-The cars are often times much more modern and cleaner than the taxis.
-The drivers have gps so no getting lost (in a past trip i had a taxi driver have to stop and ask for directions).\
-They have the candy/bottled water to offer ... I didn't know Uber did this but most have asked me.

The bad.
-If you don't speak Spanish (or you driver doesn't speak English) things can be complicated if the driver can't find you and has to try to call you ... but this is also true of taxi drivers too so that maybe a draw.
-Taxi driver can be knowledgeable on things in the gulch since they deal with a lot of gringos and know the layout.

Has Uber been approved to legally operate in Costa Rica?

Can anyone compare Uber to Easy Taxi? For those who have used either, how long do they take to arrive and how do you know it's your taxi vs the guy next to you? I did hear Uber is only credit/debit card and ET card or colones. Do both let you track your taxi on their way to you? Do they call you when you arrive?

Thanks

EasTaxi is a regular type taxi only you call them via an app on your phone... they can see where you are on their map, and you see where they are and how close they are to picking you up. You also see the tag number, driver's name probably, and they see your name. Other than that like a regular taxi. You pay them by the meter like any other taxi. A bit better though since there is a record of you being picked up, by who, and where you went - so should not be disputes about fees,..... if something goes really badly wrong there is evidence of who, when, etc. This might discourage certain really bad scenes from happening.

Thanks for the update. I will have to give them a try. Do you know if you have to have a card on file with them or is it all colones?

Thanks again.

Easy Taxi is like any taxi as far as payment. Local currency is best. Uber in CR I don't know...someone else can help you there.

Took Uber for the first time in CR. Went from Hotel Dunn Inn to the airport. Total cost $10.94. Can't beat that.

Can they do airport pickups? Most US airports they are not allowed to (but you can still enter a secret code so they know its an airport pickup).

I was there earlier this month and requested an uber from the airport. The fare from the airport to Hotel La Amisted was a little under $13. I requested the uber from the departures area on the second floor. Upon arrival I exited the baggage area, walked across the street and took elevator to the second floor - while there I needed some local money so I walked back into the airport and used the Banco San Jose ATM at the end of the terminal near the exit tax payment area. Probably about a 10 to 15 minute wait for pickup since the driver mistakenly tried to pick me up from arrivals.
