Taking street photography is part of my hobby.

Im not sure how safe it is in San Jose to take out a canon dslr in the street during the day. Will this be safe?

thanks!

It is pretty much as safe here as you would be in Miami or New York. You see people taking photos all the time with expensive cameras. You just have to keep it control of it, don't leave it lying around.

I disagree that it's as safe as Miami or New York. I believe there is a higher chance of a purse-snatcher type of thief trying to rip it off your shoulder or from your neck in San Jose. But I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it, just be more aware of your surroundings and stay in well populated areas. At night, don't even think about taking it out of your room.

I agree about not leaving it laying around.

Just my opinion.

A follow up question. Is it safe to walk around at night in San Jose? I wont be carrying my valuables with me at night.

I checked sunset. It is at 6pm so looks like it gets dark quite soon.

I'm no seasoned veteran by any means but I get sketched out a little bit walking around at night (alone). I probably wouldn't feel bothered at all in a group of 2 or more though, especially with nothing worth robbing on me.

That being said, taxis are stupid cheap and highly available so there really isn't many good reasons to be walking around at night.

Would you rather pay the equivalent of a few dollars or get robbed of everything of worth you are carrying? Not that it WOULD happen... but it COULD. Being a tourist attracts unique attention.

My point here is taxis are inexpensive insurance. No 100% guarantee of safety, but still.

Not trying to fear monger but why take unecessary chances when the alternative is cheap?

I've walked a limited bit at night near our gringo hangouts, but never alone. Even then I said to myself - that was a stupid unecessary risk...

Also, be smart about what and who you photograph. Ask permission if looking to do portraits or up close photos.

You may have considered that already since you're doing homework in advance. That's a good thing.

Do yourself a favor and get a cheap coolpix or something that takes great pictures for about 100.00 and you won't have to worry about your expensive gear getting stolen or damaged. The compact ones fit in a pocket and if it gets wet it is not a big deal. You also don't have eyes on you looking at your gear and thinking you might have a wad of cash on you.
