Guy, what's the deal with the AC?

Not Guy, but.

Apparenty the new owners failed to realize that a 20+ year old building HVAC system might need replacing (if I remember correctly, the chiller tower needs replacing).

Personally, it cools off enough in the evening as to make it okay. Especially when there is a cross breeze.

And its a hoot to have the chicas complain that it is warm (especially when they usually want you to turn off the AC).

Also, to be fair, La Amistad's AC units are hit-and-miss.

I think Guy said they were having 3 chillers coming in from the USA. They are not manufactured in CR.

I suspect it'll be a while til the air is restored.

When I stayed @ the Taormina in December I was in 1 of their newly remodeled 4th floor rooms. I was told the new a/c system on that floor didn't mesh with a/c on the other floors. They gave me my choice, have it on running 24 hrs. a day or have it unable to turn-on, no in between. I opted for the continous a/c for a couple days but it worked so good I was freezing at night & early morn. I then opted for none at all which was mostly tolerable except for the afternoons as my window was facing the sun to the west. My afternoon & early evening dates were all complaining "hace calor." Very tico you might say!

I contacted Guy about getting the master suite last week, letting him know that I was a CRT member. I wanted to make sure that it would be an updated room on the 4th floor. He assured me that it was ... and tried to overcharge me by quoting 129.99 when it is listed for 126 on their site. I told him that I wanted it for the listed 126 less the CRT discount. He never bothered to respond.

Now I see that the A/C is out, so I guess it's a good thing that he gave such terrible service.

On the website it says "Room Rates Do Not Include 13% Sales Tax". So, the CRT rate is $126 - 10% CRT discount ($113.4) and then plus 13% tax ($14.74) or about $128+.

That's 'back of an envelope' math in USD, not sure if they figure it in CRC.

And while Guy is a 'nice Guy' - the reservation manager Pablo Lópoz, is the guy who actually approves rates.

Met a friend of mine there last week. He said he was paying $57.00 a night? I was talking with Guy who I have known for years. He said if you call directly it is sometimes better. Let's Make a Deal Time.

Taormina wanted me to pay in full upfront. I said that's not gonna happen. I can find somewhere else to stay. We agreed to a temp hold on a credit card. Also, very unfriendly casino staff.

You can book online for $57 a nite. They take your CC info, but do not charge you. You pay on arrival.

I stayed at the Taormina Saturday May 28th on a return leg from the Cocal in Jaco. (I should have stayed in Jaco). NO AIR CONDITIONING in the Taormina!!! It's been broke down for months and they are repairing it on Tico Time. For a Minnesota boy, that was brutal. I was supposed to stay 4 nights. I called Don at One Lucky Dog and he got me into the Sportsmen for those last 3 nights. Gracias a Dios. This was my second stay at the Sportsmen in 5 months. There will be a third. Sportsmen's is great! From the owner, to the barmaids, to the armed doormen, to the front desk crew, and since I'm a smoker, even the taxi dudes who hang out in front are interesting to talk to while I grab a smoke. And there is a steady stream of Ladies filtering through from about noon to closing. The old gringos that hang out there daily are a tad cliquish, but once you get to know them, they are a wealth of advice. So my vote goes to the Sportsmen!!! :D

I've found the casino staff at the Toarmina very friendly and that's where I prefer to play now.

Their rooms are really nice (4th floor) price is fair, but no A/C is a problem. If I was the owner, I'd gut the chiller and put in the split ac units in each room. It would be cheaper in the long run.

I like the sportsmen's too. However, my experience is that once you pull a girl working there they tend to latch on to you. Not a big issue, a firm no works, but then there is an attitude issue.

I use to stay at the Amistad, but its getting stale for me and the maintenance upkeep of the rooms is going downhill. Put in some damn sink traps so I don;t have to smell sewer gas.

WTF... no AC and do the windows open at least or do you have to sit there and breathe stale air?

I don't know if I would want to sleep with open unscreened windows in Central America, re: Zika, Dengue, etc
