Noob here planning trip #2 for July. I can't wait to get back! Negative Nancys and wild horses will not keep me from coming back! The only negative experience I had that I didn't bring upon myself was when I ran into a couple of Chuckleheads. These Tards were not from CR or any other 3rd World country. They were both from........(drum roll)....The USA!!!

Chucklehead 1 a drunk C@ckblocker and Chucklehead 2 a constant complainer! "why don't more people speak English?" "the service is slow!" "blah blah waaaaahhhhh!"

See you in July!

Good for you NJ...go have a great time.

BB57, obviously you like CR a lot and have chosen to live there. Good for you. While I think the Country of Costa Rica is beautiful I think San Jose is a giant shithole. Just one man's opinion.

As for people commenting about your beloved country this is an open message board. Take the good with the bad. Everyone has a right to an opinion and to be able to state it.

As to CR's legal and or criminal justice system. It is a disgrace. The fact that they have held CD for over 9 months and have not even attempted to present an indictment against him is just one example of how incompetent and petty the law enforcement apparatus is in Costa Rica. The examples that others have posted only serves to document what many of us have known for years the Costa Rican legal and justice systems are a sham. Let murderers, big time thieves, drug dealers, kidnappers and Ch*ld molesters leave jail on pre trial release and keep CD incarcerated indefinitely.

Another man's opinion +1
Some good points from BB57 but what IF someone has visited CR say over a dozen times, and while they may not have ALL the facts, they have enough of them to move on to other places. That was my case but found many of the same issues in Colombia, DR. Actually found the DR to be more wild west than Venezuela. While I would never return to CR many of the things guys hate about the gulch/chicas I found to be much worse in these other areas.

Actually thought I might want to live in one of these places full time or at least in the winter but after 3 years of traveling and 20 trips, my ass resides in the good Old USA on the side of a mountain and I visit for about 5 days, that's all I can stand and can't wait to get back home. BB57 is a rare bird, IMO anyone who lives full-time in these places is a minority as most guys prefer to have regular visits as opposed to living there. It sounds as if BB57 hates the USA as much as some guys hate CR. Whatever one man's paradise is another's hell, and actually think it's great that we all don't want the same thing.

Seems the hardest thing is figuring out just exactly what it is that "you" want out of your travels, not what some "OTHER" guy wants. Then match the location that suits "you" best.

But here's one little known FACT the last time I bought a 6 pack of Imperial in SJ it was $9.00 April 2015. I find it in one Ingalls in Ashville, NC for $12:77 for a 12 pack but with Ingals card for $9:77. How can they do that? Being a best of both worlds guy do enjoy the US economy and the best tasting beer I can find here.

So kind of you the take something out of context, in some ways little has changed since 2005 when I first joined CRT, some guys just can't resist attacking what they don't understand. NJ, please do not worry about how I spend my money or how many different memberships/handles/posts that I may have had.

I like to have different sources of information, especially if it may be from a different perspective. I did it for the info in the International Section which is available only by membership, where as other readers have noticed that things in MDE have taken a downturn with everything from the exchange rate and organized kidnappings to the increase in murders. It's the occasional tidbit I might find about MDE or DR from someone who isn't promoting either place. For instance, MDE seemed really safe, clean, refreshing as compared to SJ. Someone also posted long ago about MDE that "any semblance of security is only an illusion", there were discussions about "feeling safe and being safe are not the same thing" .

The cost of a membership for information is only a drop in the bucket compared to the cost/nightmare/wasted time of a ruined trip. Plus I'm 61, been retired 6 years, have no K*ds, no family and more money than I know what to do with. Happy now, cause I sure am? :)

Since when should another man's finances and perceived outlook be any concern of yours? Rest assured that YOUR financial situation and outlook are of no concern to me.

Right now you are chugging the "CR Kool-aid" like there's no tomorrow. You've had one whole trip and are still in the fawning stage, enjoy it because soon enough the bubble will pop, your eyes will open and then you will know the "rest of the story".

And chugg-a-lug I will until I get my fill, just as I have in other countries. Then I will move a long w/o complaints and regrets. Thanks for letting me know you have more money than you know what to do with. I can stop being concerned about your finances. Now all I need to do is get one of those Ingals cards!

Instead of Imperial I would head to Greenville and hit the Total Wine and get Presidente from the DR. It only shows the Light version but it is still much better than Imperial

Hmmm...made me curious...did a quick check...

In 2014, the murder rate in Costa Rica was 9.9 per 100k. I'm guessing that the rate for San Jose is a bit higher. Source is OIJ.

In 2014, the murder rate in Los Angeles was 6.7 per 100k. (Major city in US)

Bold statements need to have back up. This one does not

Thanks, but I hate Presidente, tastes like Rolling Rock to me and gives me a headache. Didn't really like Imperial in when in CR, guess somehow that old "sour milk" flavor brings back good memories. Everything else just seems tasteless in comparison. Think I have seen Presidente in Ingels, there's only one store that I have found Imperial in, thinking maybe the manager must have some fond memories too. Actually stumbled on it one day looking for the usual Corona and low and behold there it was, and on sale too!

For the penny pinchers, this is funny, just found a reciept, I'm saving $2.70 off the regular price per 12 pack. I only go by there on my way from the airport or for Dr appt and so get 4- 12 packs(everything on the shelf) per trip. So far I've done it 4 times, the fridge is full but also I saved enough so far to have paid for my CRT membership, now that's what I call a win-win situation!

Good point, funny how some people will get an idea in their head and then they just keep repeating it over and over, even when it's not true. It's also my understanding that the statistics from any of these Latin American countries are artificially low due to many crimes not being reported.

One thing is for sure my "gut" never lies to me, I have never felt safer outside the US and if I were to be arrested I'd sure rather take my chances inside the US. Plus in the US, law abiding citizens can get a pistol permit and actually defend themselves.

Actually, you assume that per-capita ratio is the 'rate', which is a strong misconception. The 'rate' is whatever is defined, and can be considered the raw count of deaths, per-capita, per demographic, or any other means to make your point.

Numbers are good like that.

I agree that not every major US city is higher, but there are plenty that are and not just a little higher....a ton higher. You only presented LA. For the same year....2014, Chicago recorded a 15.1 per 100k. Flint Michigan...62 per 100k. Detroit...54.6 per 100k. New Orleans....53.2. Jackson, Miss...35.8. St. Louis....35.5.

So, I am not sure there is a reason to feel more afraid in Costa Rica than the US. And there is certainly no evidence to say that Costa Rica is more dangerous than the US.
