Calling in sick can be a crime

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Playing hooky can be serious if the job is a public one.

Judicial agents detained a man Tuesday and accused him of faking a doctor’s note. The man was absent form his work for three days in February. The Judicial Investigating Organization said that when the man returned to work he presented a form that said he had been under the care of a physician. The allegation is that the note was false.

The formal charge is the use of a false document. Agents did not identify the 30-year-old man or say in what agency he worked

Shouldn't C.R. designate more time to their murder rate instead of an old man blogging and a guy calling in sick?

How about 5 cops caught on video and with eye witnesses abducting a guy?

C.R. is getting downrite scary with their arbitrary law enforcement.

What's next?

Six months of preventative detention for walking too fast?

A public worker who gets his salary funded by the tax payers should be under extra scrutiny. Too bad the USA isn't as strict with public workers. But I agree not as important as murder and abduction rates.

Completely agree. CR seems to not be able to get their priorities straight. Murder and abductions should get priority along with crimes against Ch*ldren and the elderly.
Those paid by public money should be held to a higher standard

Eventually their crimes of violence may affect their tourist money. But, CR is so popular maybe they aren't worried about it.

How does this apply to you? Have you been arrested for some arbitrary thing?

Am Costa Rica is hardly the pulse of San Jose? You may have missed that

This sort of fraud could get you arrested in Canada or US as well. Only takes an employer willing to press charges.

OK, TIME FOR ANOTHER BB57 RANT!!!!!

ON THIS AND 2-3 OTHER THREADS, LATELY THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF CRAP ABOUT HOW BAD COSTA RICA IS.

It amazes me how many are so willing and quick to be super critical of Costa Rica and other "third world" countries based on often questionable sources of info and hearsay. And mainly without ALL the facts!!!! These same people sure need to take a look in their own country, their own state, city, town, neighborhood; hell maybe in their own back yard. Clean up your own mess before criticizing others. One of the biggest problems in the "good old USA" is the constant "need" by both the government and the people to try to tell the rest of the world what they should do and HOW to do it!!!!

Sure CR has crime problems! Sure CR has some "strange" laws! Sure they do some things very different than what we are accustom to in the USA!! But before you start telling everyone how bad it is here; maybe you should look at the crime in your own country, look at the thousands of stupid laws that are on the books all over the USA, and look at all the very stupid things that are done everyday in the States.

As I have said many, many times over the last 20+ years: If you don't like it here, if you think it is 'so' dangerous here, if you think it 'stinks' here, if you think the people here are soooo stupid, STAY THE HELL OUT OF COSTA RICA!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! Believe me the vast majority of the Ticos would much prefer that you did not come here.

If you come here and spend all your time in a "shithole" you are going to see "shit", you are going to smell like "shit", and you are going to look like shit!! Believe it or not, there is a whole different world outside of the gulch and the slums in and around San Jose, just as there is a big difference in the big city slums of the USA and "small town USA"!!

By the way, the 5 cops have been arrested and charged. How many police have been arrested in the USA for committing crimes in the last few months????? How about the US citizen who when charged with molesting a Ch*ld (IN THE USA) fled to Costa Rica and then Nicaragua and was captured recently and returned to the US??? You act like these things never happen in the US!

Always quick to see and judge others, but always blind to what is going on in your own neighborhood!!!

One other point; I spend a lot of time around students and tourist from the USA who are often here for extended stays, and frequently travel around different parts of the country. I NEVER hear the kind of negative comments from them that I hear from mongers!! Wonder why??????

BB57, obviously you like CR a lot and have chosen to live there. Good for you. While I think the Country of Costa Rica is beautiful I think San Jose is a giant shithole. Just one man's opinion.

As for people commenting about your beloved country this is an open message board. Take the good with the bad. Everyone has a right to an opinion and to be able to state it.

As to CR's legal and or criminal justice system. It is a disgrace. The fact that they have held CD for over 9 months and have not even attempted to present an indictment against him is just one example of how incompetent and petty the law enforcement apparatus is in Costa Rica. The examples that others have posted only serves to document what many of us have known for years the Costa Rican legal and justice systems are a sham. Let murderers, big time thieves, drug dealers, kidnappers and Ch*ld molesters leave jail on pre trial release and keep CD incarcerated indefinitely.

I agree with BB57 100%. Think San Jose is a shithole, you haven't been to Oakland. As far as keeping CD in jail for months without a trial, the USA has had people in jail for years at Guantanimo. The good old USA put US citizens in concentration camps during WWII for the crime of being born. Ask a native American whose ancestors were slaughtered and confined to reservations what they think of poor old CD being in a foreign jail. Ask African Americans how indignant they are about crime problems in Costa Rica. Give some people free food and they will bitch about the lines. Don't you love being around people who go through life looking at the negative side of everything.

As I said, comments by people who do not know shit about the real Costa Rica and believe all the crap they hear in the gulch!! By people who have been here one or two times and are "authorities??" on CR!! By people who think if it is not the "good old USA' or done the way it is in the USA, it is wrong or not correct!! And above all, by people who are totally blind to what is happening in their own back yard!!! Every major US city today has a higher major crime rate than San Jose!!

NO where did I say you couldn't nor shouldn't post what ever the hell you wish!! I am just saying grow up, learn the facts, open your eyes, and clean up your own back yard before you criticize others; others who have their own country and who have the right (as much as many in the USA would really like to control the rest of the world) to run and govern their country as they wish!! Costa Rica IS a 3rd world country! NO 3rd world country is up to USA standards in every aspect!! If you come here and expect it to be like the USA, and cannot accept it being different then, YES, I am saying STAY AT HOME!!

As for CD, it is not a matter of whether we think it is right or wrong in terms of what has happened to him. For sure it goes against the way things are done in the USA, BUT AGAIN THIS IS NOT THE USA!!! PERIOD, END OF DISCUSSION!!! We have no control over the laws of ANY OTHER COUNTRY. We can not tell them how to run their country. They have as much right to protect their country as they see fit as the USA does. CD knew what he was doing, he knew about the law and it's possible consequences towards him. According to his very good friend here, the two of them had a very long discussion the morning before he left and was arrested about this very subject (and according to this person, it was not the first time they had talked about it) According to his friend, CD was his typical arrogant self, stated several times that CR was not going to do anything to him, he was/is a US citizen and could do what he wanted!!! He knew that he was the main reason for the law being passed in the first place; yet he continued to do "his thing"!!

No, we do not have to like the laws of another country, but we do have to abide by them while in their country!! Yes we can state our disagreement with those laws; but if you break one of their laws, there is no reason why anyone should not expect to be held responsible for doing so! As for the "preventive detention" law here, yes it goes against the USA "innocent till proven guilty" philosophy! MANY countries have the "guilty till proven innocent" way of doing things. Why should you expect to be able to visit another country where their laws are different and NOT be expected to obey THEIR LAWS?? WOULD YOU EXPECT PEOPLE VISITING THE USA TO BE ABLE TO BREAK OUR LAWS JUST BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE LAW IN THEIR COUNTRY????

My main point in my post was this:

It seems like it is always the same small group of guys who are constantly running down everything about CR. Guys who seem to love to hate and take their hate out of a country they choose to visit of their own free will. YOU are not going to change the country nor the laws. You are never going to be happy coming here. You are hell bent to warn others of how bad it is here (in your opinion - an opinion that few non-mongers would agree with). You seem to think that the only reason anyone would come here is for sex (actually less than 3% of the CR tourist come here for that reason).

You hate the country! You hate the laws! You hate the "stink"! I just cannot figure out why you continue to return and/or post on a board that has to do with Costa Rica and the sex scene here!!! Do you just love to do things that make you miserable? Or is that you just have to have something negative to help you make everyone else as miserable and unhappy as you are????

Reminds me of the (rather large) group of old expats who have been living here for years. They get up every morning, run down to their favorite bar and wait in line till it opens. Then they spend the rest of the day drinking away what little money they have and complaining to each other about how bad life is in Costa Rica and what a shit hole the gulch is (like most mongers who come here, the gulch is all they know about CR). When the bar closes they stagger home to their dinky little one room apartment to sleep off their drunkenness so they can do the same thing tomorrow! But leave and go somewhere better?? hell no!!!!!!!!!!!

Bang Bang, you are spot on.

How can anyone from the US sit around and bitch about the justice system in CR?

Zimmerman ignores a 911 cop who told him not to follow Trayvon Martin then starts an altercation with him, gets his ass kicked, so he pulls a gun and straight up murders the K*D....AND gets off.

Cayce Anthony's daughter is missing for 31 days and she doesn't report it....FOR 31 DAYS! In the meantime she is out partying and living it up. They find her daughter murdered and she doesn't get so much as a Ch*ld neglect conviction from it.

We have 13,000+ gun related deaths last year and every year in the US.

So, with just those few examples, do you really want to complain about the Costa Rican justice system?

And if you guys hate it so much, then why bother going there or posting on a CR forum??? Why would you waste your time on something you so clearly hate? Find some place you love and go post about it, at least you would be happier.

Look...I agree the K*D in MO got what he had coming, but Trayvon was walking through his Dad's neighborhood, minding his own business. Zimmerman was told to stay away from the K*D and instead he ignored that order and started a fight with the K*D. THEN when he was getting his ass beat he pulled a gun and killed him. The difference is the K*D in MO went looking for trouble and got it. Trayvon went looking for skittles and a drink and Zimmerman started trouble. Big difference.

Noob here planning trip #2 for July. I can't wait to get back! Negative Nancys and wild horses will not keep me from coming back! The only negative experience I had that I didn't bring upon myself was when I ran into a couple of Chuckleheads. These Tards were not from CR or any other 3rd World country. They were both from........(drum roll)....The USA!!!

Chucklehead 1 a drunk C@ckblocker and Chucklehead 2 a constant complainer! "why don't more people speak English?" "the service is slow!" "blah blah waaaaahhhhh!"

See you in July!
