When I was staying at Zona, Scores, Dunn Inn or Mona Lisa whenever I would walk past the trannies I would say hello, and or compliment them. If I was in the penthouse at Zona I would call down to them from the balcony always being nice. I figured if anyone ever tried to cause me a problen I might have the trannies come to my rescue, or at least cause whomever was bothering me to think twice.

Agreed. It doesn't make any sense to treat someone like trash just because they are different than you. But ... I don't think I'd be looking to the trannies to save me from an impending fate.

I will be staying at LA in April. Hate to sound like everyone else here, but I am also a good sized in-shape guy 6'3" and 210. But I don't court trouble. I would definitely take a cab at night. But last year, during the day, I had no problem walking from LA to HDR or surrounding neighborhoods. I assume it is still relatively safe to walk around during the day? Is that also true when walking to Z2 or one of the other MPs from LA? Thanks.

Walking/cabbing is a TEHO topic. You should be fine during the day, and be more comfortable using cabs after dusk.

I agree with those who advise to take a cab after dark. Particularly late at night when some of us may have some booze in our belly it is much safer spending a few colones than walking the streets. From most of the venues we frequent the cab fare is equivilent to $2-$3, I have always looked at it as cheap insurance.

To the OP I am gald you were not injured or anything of that nature but it is never a good idea to fight over a hamburger or something of that nature.

Last month I went out by myself, during the day, to see a Nica I met 2 days earlier. She works at Zona II. Nice lazy walk from LA to Zona about 20 mins or so. When I finally made it outta Zona II, It was dark. This was my 1st CR trip so I don't have the Gulch layout down yet. So after a nice conversation with Ronnie at Zona, off I go back to LA. or so I thought. I make a left when I shoulda made a right.

I'm heading towards a big building I think is INS, but it's not. Every block gets crappier and crappier. Trannies with butterfly knives whirling in the fingers, blowing me kisses and down some side streets a couple of burned out cars. Now I'm in my 50's, but am a former drunken bar room brawler, shit stirrer and all around pain in the ass. By the time I start smelling the river and have an old timer Tico tell me "area no good for gringo at nite", I'm getting real nervous! Oh, and I left my CR cell in my room safe! Not that I know any ph#s to call anyhow.

The Old Timer tells me to find a taxi or head back that way. Shit! No taxis in that neighborhood and head back that way means nothing to a rookie Gulch Monger.
So I head in the direction the OT says, praying for a taxi. I go over the river bridge and there's a taxi driver taking a leak next to his cab! He agrees to take me back to the Amistad. Thank U Lil Baby Jesus. Back at the LA my fellow Mongers tell me how LUCKY I was to make it outta that Gang Controlled Area.

in the future. ME=taxi at nite unless with super experienced Gulch Wing or 2!!!

Play it safe fellas!

The takeaway here is to use cabs if you don't know your way around. But the OP knows his way around quite well, and didn't get lost.

You were also early in the evening, versus the OP late at nite. Now, if you were wandering about that area when the OP was walking, you may have had an interesting interaction or two.

Walking alone that late can be risky, I feel safer if I am with my wingman walking around. Usually I am back to the LA with a chica and sleeping by midnight !!! If you are out that late alone a taxi might be better. You have to be carefull anywhere in this world.

I always try to pick a wingman, who I know I can outrun, just in case. If the zombie apocalypse ever happens, I'll be hanging around the guy with the limp. :D

Another case for wingmen?

Two men were hiking in the wilderness.

Man #1: If we get charged by a bear we need to run.

Man #2: I heard the best thing to do is play dead. A man can't out run a bear.

Man 1#: I only need to out run you, not the bear.

YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO CAREFUL
jUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU ARE SAFE....YOU'RE PROBABLY NOT.

I first traveled to Cr in the early 70's (1972). At that time I could walk anywhere at 2am and never have any trouble...and I spent many times around the gulch and elsewhere. About the same in the 80's. Things began to change around the late 90's and got worse. After around 2003 to 2004 the crime factor really set in. (Estimated dates from memory)

I was coming out of the Morazan casino and standing on the curb 30' from the entrance....I was attacked by two men and a woman. knocked to the sidewalk and hands looking all over me. I kicked, hit and cursed at them. They must have seen this might take too long and jumped in a car nearby and sped off. It was around 11:am and no one offered to help.

I also was held up in the late daylight at Morazan park. My wing man didn't want to leave the casino. All I had was about 20 something dollars. I gave it to them and they ran.

For a number of years I have taken cabs for just about everywhere when the sun sets....although many of them are a rip off.
