Just wanted to give a quick note for anyone thinking of flying spirit into sjo. While I don't mind the airline and the whole pay for water thing it's not always the best choice I found out.

My last trip I flew on American Airlines, it was actually $100 more for a shorter flight than with spirit. But, spirit also charges $25 each way for a checked bag. So I figured why not spend the extra 50 and fly with American.

At the end of the trip I found an unexpected bonus. American pre pays your $29 exit tax for you as well. So end of the day only a $20 difference. Just FYI everyone.

American also charges $25 each way for checked bags. Right? They did for me last June. Checked bags on American use to be no charge for the first bag to foreign destinations but they changed that to Costa Rica about 18 months ago.

If you have the American Air credit card you get 2 free checked bags.

Do a couple round trips and you have the annual fee covered.

You get a "free" carry on with AA and then you pay $25 EACH way for checked bags. The weight limits are 50 lbs on checked bags. Spirit charges for carry on and checked bags and the weight limit is 40 lbs. I have never flown Spirit and hope it don't considering the negative comments from people that have.

Totally with you Hank!

Spirit is a bottom feeder and that's their target consumer. Good for them.

Spirit pops up on most of my fare watches... then I look at the departure/arrival times (which suck) then add up fee this and fee that. So I get to ride with the trailer park illuminati, arrive at 1:00 am, and save $50. Whoop, whoop.

And no offense to the OP meant here. We all have our own perspectives on budget, travel preferences, etc.

I remember the days of ATA and I'd have to fly them regularly to FL for work... lowest direct fare was policy. Yuck.

I've never had a carry on charge with American.

I think my biggest point on the thread was the prepaid exit fee. Saves you from having to wait in the line and might sway your decision on which airline to choose.

Every time I visit I am bringing 2 checked bags so for me Spirit will never get my business. The other thing is even making a quick trip out of Miami you cannot get shittier flights than what Spirit offers. It is almost like they are ashamed of their airplanes and only want to fly them in the dark.

Which is good prep for a lean talent night at the Del Rey.

Also have a American Air Credit Card. In a genius marketing plan you can check a bag for free only on domestic flights and NOT on international ones. Someone please explain that to me, please.

As for Spirit, have flown them a few times because of schedule and not price. They target price and price alone. At some point, I hope we all reach a station in life where we resist the lowest common denominator.

LOL Most of the stuff I bring is for my house. I do bring a few vibrators almost everytime but for the most part it is household stuff that is either too cheaply made or too expensive to buy in costa rica. Or this next trip I have a sex swing I am bringing with me and the hardware to hang it.

I wouldn't fly Spirit if the tickets were free.
