I just spent a week in San Jose and Jaco.

I saw the HDR on Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Tuesday nights. The lineups were shit.

I spent only one night in Jaco, a MONDAY, of all days. The lineup was fantastic, with a 10:1 chicas to chicos ratio. I would have done 75%-80% of the lineup. (They were also starting the bid at $150).

Personally, I'm done with the HDR, and I have no use for Jaco outside of the Cocal at night (and no use for an opening ask of $150). My next trip this month is to MDE. Let's see if that factors into my point of view.

BD are you joining the Costa Rica sucks club?

If yes the page has truly turned.

I've peronally not been to MDE but fear it would ruin the rest of the world for me. Only one way to find out I guess.

Grant it, I haven't been to HDR much in the past 3-4 years (only a handful of times, usually to meet friends) but I thought there were some cuties in there last week. But only talked to a few, so maybe their attitudes sucked. I will say that the ones that I had gave less than spectacular performances. Pretty much going thru the motions. I spoke to other guys, and even chicas about this, how the majority don't seem to care about putting in any kind of effort to get repeat business.

And paying $150, I would probably cry thinking about the 3 sessions in MDE (2-3 hours each) that I just gave up for this lousy mercenary 40 minute (at best) fugg in CR. Besides, I can't stand the heat in Jaco, so that's not an option for me.

The girls go where they can find customers, the guys go where the girls are. A big factor that has changed the landscape here in Costa Rica was the opening of the highway to Jaco and the opening of Los Suenos. In years past it took three hours or more to get from the airport to Jaco. A big part of the customer base that supported the Del Rey was sports fishermen coming to Costa Rica for the outstanding offshore action. They would arrive at the airport in the afternoon or evening, come spend a night at the Del Rey or Presidente, play around then go to Jaco or other fishing locations the next morning. After fishing for a few days they would return to San Jose and spend the night before heading to the airport. With the new highway, they now head straight to Jaco. These are the guys the girls really want to get, big spenders. The Beatle bar priced themselves out of competition and the Cocal was the beneficiary of the business. The Del Rey reacted as their business started to drop off not by making themselves more attractive but by trying to make the same money from fewer customers through price increases. There was a time when old, fat, ugly women were not common at the Del Rey. They could not compete. They make up 70% of what you see there now. There are mps that offer better average lineups at much better prices. Go to the Cocal and 90% of what you see there are top shelf. The prices are higher because they can get these prices. Remember we are not the customers they prefer to see. They go with us when they give up on finding the newbie with the big wallet. The scene is not dead in Costa Rica. It is different. There are beautiful women everywhere. The price and service depends on your skills. It is like going fishing in the ocean. There are plenty of fish out there but you better know when and where to look or you will spend a lot of time fishing and not catching.

Disappointing review by BD. I have been going to CR since 2005 and would say over the past 5+ years there has been a steady erosion of the scene at the HDR. IMHO the rise of Jaco has contributed to some of it the past few years. The girls are going to go where the money is and if they can make more $$$ in Jaco they are going to go there. I have tended to be on the liberal end of the spending curve but many of the Jaco guys would make me look like a Cheap Charlie. Getting quoted $150 for an hour just boggles my mind. In the past others felt that way about being quoted the dreaded cien.

In my case I am sort of lazy and look for convenience when I travel for the hobby. I basically average 4 days a trip and I dont feel like flying to SJO and catching a bus or whatever for the 1 1/2 hour ride to Jaco and then back a few days later. During certain times of the year Jaco is hot as hell and physically uncomfortable to be in. I am the same way when I go to the DR I go to Boca Chica/Santo Domingo because it is more convenient and the airfare is 1/2 of what it would be going to Peurto Plata (Sosua). The alternative is to fly into Santo Domingo and take a 4 hour bus ride to Sosua. The cost of the chicas is the same in both places. ($35-$45 a session) For me the only place left to explore is MDE.

I was there last night and was very disappointed in the lineup and the cien mentality. Cien is automatic. Talked to one chick and I told her right off I was not interested because of the cien pricing. She said "actually I charge more than that?" Key Largo sucked also. More bartenders than customers. Today I spent 5 hours with one of my fav's who is 47 years younger than me. Cost was 25 mil or $47.00. The game is still alive, just have to dig a little deeper.

I'm NOT bragging, but I simply want to say that I still have a great time in SJ without spending a lot of money.

I have no game, and very little Spanish ........ and I am a "bottom feeder." I can find many cute, skilled girls who are fun to be with. I am very happy with my "rotation." The difference for me may be that I am never in a hurry because I stay in SJ for weeks at a time.

That is a great point to make as I got to the point where I was staying 3-4 weeks and after you do that once or twice you get remembered by the girls and you tend to not have the issues with being bombarded with CIEN. I did find it funny as I would get girls coming up to me stating she was a friend of so and so, then ask if we could get a drink. I would point blank ask them what did so and so say to make them want to approach me. Normally I would get the oh just that you are a nice guy and she had a good time. Every now and then though I would get one that would say that I did something to the girl that she likes to do and if I would be willing to go to the room with her. By staying longer you get a reputation that makes its way around the chica network and if it is a good reputation it will result in much less hassles and much more fun. If it is a bad one then stick to the MP's

Definitely agree and have eyewitness experience regarding the above posts.

The opening of the highway to Jacó and the emergence of Cocal and Croc's as Chica-friendly destinations has drawn a lot of girls away from the Del Rey and downtown in general. I know several of the former top girls who used to work the Del Rey, who haven't been to the Del Rey in well over a year. Most of them are working Cocal and Croc's on Thursday-Saturday night. Some of them are going to Tamarindo and the Papagayo resorts at least once a month.

The reason is simple. For most of these top-end girls, talking a gringo into paying $100 or $200 or even $300 for a roll in the hay is a piece of cake. Why would she hug the rail at the Del Rey, waiting for a gringo to talk her down from Cien to $60, when she can get free drinks all night and $200 from a high-roller at Cocal?

Like it or not, this is the situation that mongers in Costa Rica are facing right now. The cream of the crop is not at Del Rey any more. It's at Cocal, Croc's, and the resort areas in Guanacaste, and it's waiting for someone who is willing to unpeel a roll of $100 bills.

I'm not trying to burst anyone's bubble here. There are still some gems to be found downtown. But they are the minority. I've lurked on this board for quite a while, and I've seen the posts that say that the guys who pay Cien can't take the girls from you or affect the scene downtown. I can honestly tell you that is simply not true. Those guys have already taken those girls from the "I don't pay Cien" crowd. I know this because I know a lot of those girls. And no... I don't sleep with them. I can't afford them. But I do know them. Some of them are my neighbors, right here in San José.

Someone who pays Cien or more can most certainly affect the experience of other mongers, and here's how. I personally know at least 20 or 25 of the hottest girls who used to work the Del Rey, Key Largo, and Sportsmens. They are still around, and they are as hot as they ever were. However, not a single one of them has been within 10 miles of the Del Rey in over a year. You'll never see them again. They all have $300-per-night gringos on speed-dial. Some of them have new cars. A few of them have luxury apartments/condos. Some of them regularly take vacations on various islands in the Caribbean. I'm not looking down on anyone here. I know the situation, and I am in the same boat. I can't touch these girls, and neither can you. WE (me and you guys) are stuck with the leftovers. We just can't compete with what has happened in Jacó, Los Sueños, and Papagayo over the past 2 or 3 years.

Me too, actually. They're cheaper, and they're more fun!

What I'm saying is... You don't know what you're missing, if you don't know that you're missing it.

The only reason that I say this is because I know a couple of guys... "Prima Donnas"... that come down to Costa Rica and tell everybody that their shit don't stink, and that they can grab the hottest girl in the Del Rey, and they don't have to pay her a dime. These guys have such a magnificent game that these girls will Phuck them for free. Hell... to hear these guys talk... these girls will pay Them to let them Phuck them.

Most of you guys have met these guys... "Yeah... I'm a Bad-Ass! I can Phuck any girl I want! I got game! I don't have to pay! I Phuck these girls for free! I'm not like you worthless phucking mongers! Hah Hah! I AM SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU!"

You know the type. If you haven't met them before... all you have to do is hang around the most popular monger venues. That's where these guys like to hang out. They love to hang out at the Del Rey and Sportsmens... because they know that that is where the mongers hang out. That way, they have the maximum opportunity to say, "Hah! I'm so much better than you! I Phuck these girls for free! But your stupid monger ass pays them $100!" These guys live to put you down, so that they can feel better about themselves. It's a very common tale.

Yeah for all the griping I never seem to depart HDR in the evening alone.

Then again I've never gone to Jaco and only started going to SJ a couple years ago. Don't know what I'm missing so fine by me.

Back in April and I'll see how that goes.

It's not really "griping"... it's just a kind of "state of the union" address.

That's the real key to the whole situation. If you don't know what you're missing, then you'll never miss it.
