Watup everyone. heading to costa rica for the first time, and going solo. Never been on a solo international trip so any tips would help. Im staying in San Jose on the 26th and 27th then am deciding to head to Jaco for the 28th 29th and 30th and come back on the 31st and fly back on the 1st. I hear sportsmens lodge is the place to stay while in San Jose, while others say stay at the HDR (can be overwhelming for first timers blah blah). Also what hotel do you recomend while in Jaco? I looked up the Cocal Casino but I also heard some things about the Crocs.

Honestly this trip im trying to get a nice room, have a chica in my bed to chill with and have as company. I want to be safe, go to a club possibly (if its safe and fun), check out a MP if u guys recommend it, and do anything else you might recommend. So please, give me some input please i would really appreciate it and will definitely give feedback to others when I come back.

Also one more thing, do you guys recommend Jaco or Manuel Antonio? Can pickup a chick there or should I skip that place?

In 5 days, don't spend the whole time traveling. San Jose and Jaco is plenty.

Read a few Trip Reports, decide on what places you want to try out, and just do it.

No special tips on traveling solo other than keep your wits about you. All the places you plan to be you'll make some connections to trade notes and hang out with.

I've done most all my international trips solo and I actually prefer it. I've met up with friends a couple times and that was cool too. Yes, there is some security to being in a wolfpack... but also potential drama if you wind up babysitting.

You have the basics figured out and are doing a bit of homework. You'll have a blast.

Another place to consider is Zona2. It has the MP angle covered as well. Really can't go wrong with Sportsmens if you want to be around the most gringos in a relaxed atmosphere or Amistad, one block away. Make up your mind soon as it is the busy season now.

If you go to Jaco, Cocal is the spot, have not been to Crocs. Manuel Antonio is nice but not much in terms of available girls. Manuel has a much nicer beach area.

Spend a few hours minimum reading the board each week before your your trip and try to learn some basic spanish if you him no spanish skills, it is not mandatory but will help.

Thanks for the advice. yeah decided that I will be in SJ on the 26th and 27th at the SL, I actually arrive early morning on the 26th. Gonna head to Crocs on the 28th and stay till the 31st. Take a shuttle back to SL on the 31st and fly out evening on the 1st. Think thats a good amount of time for my first trip. If anyones in the area, lmk. Thanks everyone for advice and tips on the forums, seriously impressed with all the info.

+1 HD.... IMO, keeping your wits about you is critical when traveling solo. Like others have pointed out before, don't drink to the point where you are shitfaced and can't make quick, reasonable, & rational decisions. Usually when traveling solo, you're watching your own six and being stumbling drunk is generally not conducive to your well-being. Ever notice how much a belligerent drunk stands out in the crowd??? Now couple that with being solo and you have a recipe for failure and a probable series of unfortunate incidents. Know your limits!

Also, while you're at SL, you will most certainly see other mongers/CRT members sitting at the bar area enjoying themselves. Don't be afraid to chat with these guys, as most of them are friendly and will often offer very good advice. Buy them them a beer to show your gratitude. :D

Finally, in all situations, trust your gut... if it doesn't feel right, don't do it. Your 'spidey senses' are there for a reason. I served 8 years USMC with 2 tours in OEF-A, and my gut feeling has kept me alive more than once. Trust your gut, it WILL NOT steer you wrong.

Best of Luck... I hope you have lots of fun and thoroughly enjoy yourself.

Hello Whodattho,

When at SL please "ask for Bill" if I am not there let the front desk know and they will message me.
I would like to meet you and buy you your first cold one.
Safe travels!

Trust your instincts. If something smells fishy (pun intended), NEXT! If it's too good to be true, it's most definitely is. Example, the hottest chica you ever saw says that she would like you to go to her house where you can fugg her brains out for free because you are so hot. If that has not happened to you before in the US, chances are pretty good you are being set up for something bad.

If you like sports, Sportsmen's. If you like all meals paid and drinks la amistad.

If you par taking in woman work out the details first price, time, ect. If you can't speak spanish use a translator on phone. Never pay upfront and avoid overly aggressive woman.

If you want cell service, Kolbi in airport is about $10 for sim if got unlocked phone good for a week, calls/text/internet.

Shopping district past Del Ray is nice to visit during the day. Don't be afraid to try different places to eat. Very good food to be found.

MP's New Fantasy early in the morning, IDEM, Relax, and Zona II all great.

Stripclubs- La Grillion, Panta Rosa, Alcazar

Just working girls most at Del Ray and Sportsmen.

Colonial Casino gives better exchange rate for $american money, was 53500 per hundred. Del Ray is 52000. If you need an ATM the ones by sports are the best it's in medical building. I've take up to $1000 at a time there.

Call your Debit card provider and let them know you are traveling so you don't get your card randomly locked on vacation.

No need to be flashy, leave the Jewelry at the house. Dress doesn't really matter either, less attention always better than more. Take taxi's at night, people argue about this but since it's your first time I'd suggest it.
Safe or a luggage lock is good for hiding valuables.

Other than that have a blast.

Thanks Jota really appreciate the advice. So the shopping district is near SL? Gotta do some shopping for myself and friends while I am there you know. Also which MP would you recommend thats nearby SL? Possibly one with hotter girls and maybe a lineup? Never done that before and it would be pretty cool! And how much should I expect to pay for massage/extras?

Make sure you ask about their 'room guest' policies.
