I know many of you have a separate cell phone that you use for your trips. And you probably have Whatsapp on it. Do you register both in US with the same number? I just tried to add Whatsapp to a new old smart phone to use on my trips, but when I entered the same number as my regular home cell phone, it re-activated my Whatsapp on my home cell.

Do I need to wait till I get to CR and register it with my CR number?

Thanks.

I also carry 2 phones & whenever I get down there & get a new SIM card, am able to start using Whatsapp right away. The only difference is the # that shows up when using the new sim card. You have to go into settings & chenge the # to your new SIM card # so it will be current. Otherwise, the previous # will show up when you send a msg. Also, when she or whomever responds, I believe they will be sending the msg to a non existent #.

I hope tis helps. Remember , go into settings or account setup & change that phones# to your new #!!

But when you registered it, you used a different number than your regular cell phone number?

You must have your CR sim in your phone to setup your CR# on whatsapp. Whatsapp will verified the CR# through your CR sim card. Your CR sim card doesn't work back home so the verification process has failed.

Thanks

Last Feb I went to Nicaragua & got a Claro chip for the phone. Set up whatsapp with the 505 country code & everything was fine. Left it in that phone until I got back to the CR. Got a Kolbi chip in SJ & a new CR 506 #. Everyone I whatsapped asked if I was in Nicaragua. Everyone I called or texted got the 506 CR #. I went in to settings on the WhatsApp App, changed the 505# to the new 506 # & everything was jiving!

To be clear, Whatsapp allows the same number to be used on multiple devices, so long as they are different device types. So a cell phone and tablet can echo the same Whatsapp number, but not 2 cell phones.

If you have registered Whatsapp on a cell phone and change sim cards, Whatsapp still works as if the other number was still in use. I have Whatsapp on a phone that the number expired on over a year ago. However, Whatsapp contacts have to continue to use that old number for me in their contacts (though can have another number for voice calls).

I've decided to buy a phone for my CR trip. If I get a simm there, will it be a CR number? And I also have an android tablet I'd like to put Whatsapp on now, but do I need a number to do this? I don't see how I can do it if I don't have the # for the CR phone until I get to CR.

As always, appreciate any advice :).

The SIM that you buy in CR will have a CR number - - - 4 digits with a 506 country code.

WhatsApp needs a phone number to complete the download to your device. So, no phone number yet - - no WhatsApp on your tablet.

I've bought several BLU unlocked android smart phones from Amazon.com for just under $50. I use one every day. The batteries and cameras are a little weak, but the operating system is great.

Believe me....... a girl without a phone will make you really happy for a $50 smart phone. I keep a few with me for "emergencies."

Does your tablet have a sim slot? If not, when you install Whatsapp on it, you will have to use a number that is already connected to Whatsapp or have a working cell phone. Whatsapp does not support using the application on a tablet without a sim. There is a work-around to overcome that, only if you have a cell phone with an active sim card. The bottom line is, Whatsapp has to verify the phone number you use, either via SMS message or phone call. No active cell phone number = no Whatsapp installation.

Correct. Set up Whatsapp on a cell phone, and then transfer the WhatsApp folder to a tablet. Then install the WhatsApp app on the tablet. When it asks for a number, give it the one already registered. Whatsapp will think you have reinstalled the app (rather than made a new install - because the folder exists with metadata) and it will work.
