The 500 colon bill has been phased out and replaced with a coin. I think you can still exchange them in banks but they are no longer accepted anywhere else. Hold on to the 50 colon bill, that has got to be a collectors' item by now. The 1000 and 5000 are still in use.

YO Currency Cocks:

Speaking of CR Bills. I really hated it when they replaced the 500 c bill with the 500 coin. It is so much like the 100 coin that in not well lighted and haste situations I am always giving out the 500 coin when I think I'm giving 100 colone coins. One time I mistakingly gave four of them as a taxi fare. Hell, I've tried separate pockets, whatever but still do it.

Just a note: I have bought CR gold coins on some trips and it's interesting to look at a 1898 5 colone (same size as our US $5 gold coin) and am reminded to the inflation since then......about 100 times the 1898 face value.

The original 500c coin that replaced the bill was so similar to the 100c that it was soon replaced by a larger one. Interestingly, the original 500c coin is no longer accepted. If you have some, you can go wait at a line at a bank to convert them. I just gave mine away to people who looked more likely to wait in a bank line.
