Was wondering if any of you vets could give me any idea of what things are like in San Jose around Costa Rica's Independence Day (which I believe is celebrated around September 15)? Was considering a trip down at that time and I'm not sure what things would be like at that time.

I was in Jaco/Quepos last year for Independence Day, and they had school K*ds running down the roads, parades with the K*ds on floats, and bands/ cheerleaders, mimes, etc. It was kinda funny, as I asked a couple of ticos who they gained independence from, and got several different answers, ranging from Colombia to Spain to I don't know.

YO CR Independence day:

Actually, CR gained independence from Spain in 1821. In 1848 there was a declaration of absolute independence as a sovereign state. After a brief war in 1948, a new costitution was initiated Nov. 7, 1949. As for CR not having a military, the constitution of 1949 included the prohibition of a standing army.

In reference to Diablo asking local ticos about their independence, seems like their history education in schools may sadly becoming like the government schools in this country. So many of our "high school graduates" could not tell you shit about U.S. history. or the current elected people in congress. Believe it or not, a number of our school history books have as few as 7 to 10 pages of pre 1900 history. That was told to me by a doctorate and and an ME in education but I am currently looking for data to verify it. If so, thanks N.E.A.

Landrac, to answer your question more fully...

The only problem I encountered last year actually happened September 14. My lady at ZB was more concerned with making plans with her familyq for independence day picnics etc. than with taking care of me. her constantly ringing cellular became a distraction, then a real irritant.

Independence Day (which is in fact Sept. 15) is a huge family day in costa Rica. Parades of little K*ds block major roadways, and a few businesses close or have reduced hours. It's not however, as big a deal as the Fourth of July here in the States.

Fellow, quit worryig about small things. Next you're going to be asking if the weather will be OK or will the chicas be plentiful. The taxi situation will be just fine and since you say you are staying at the Pres.......the most independence you will see is when the colones are liberated from your hand after a chica has drained you........you will be JUST FINE.

BTW, be sure to leave a donation to the "Send Circus to CR" fund with the travel desk in the lobby.

I don;t mean to sound bad but don't forget the parades run across 2nd, 1st or central ave.

Getting to the presidente could be a little hassle since the taxi has to go either on 2nd ave or 1st ave.

Now, usually all the parades start at 10 am, depending on your arrival time could be clear for you.
